"That thing took his SOUL... But... Thanks to Papyrus... I think I know how to bring him back."
"How?"
"As silly as it sounds... We'll use what would be the opposite of HATE... Love."
Frisk and Toriel

Love is the fourth episode of the second season of Glitchtale.

Plot[]

W. D. Gaster dreams about the CORE Accident, where his experiments with the CORE cause it to overheat, but Gaster manages to stabalize it to prevent the Underground from being destroyed. However, since the elevated platform they are on was too unstable, Gaster and Sans attempt to leave, but Gaster ultimately falls into the abyss while Sans gets struck by the CORE, granting him his flashing eye. Gaster then wakes up to Papyrus, who is healing him, and Jessica Grey, whom he still despises.

Gaster tries to teleport to Alphys's location to help her, but due to his injuries, his magic causes his SOUL to crack slightly. Noticing himself bleeding, Gaster questions this since monsters do not bleed. When he realizes that Undyne is fighting Bête Noire, Gaster says that Undyne has a chance. He explains further that monsters should not bleed since they do not possess much physical matter, but due to eating human food, they gained more physical qualities, allowing them to endure blood, and Undyne could endure Determination.

At the CORE's Expansion Facility, Undyne the Undying overpowers Bête, striking her almost effortlessly. After throwing a massive spear at Bête, the facility is almost destroyed, and half of Bête's body has disintegrated. However, Bête is healed when Akumu eats the vile of HATE, which also enhances and slightly disfigures. Later on, HATE starts sickening Bête, prompting her to flee. In the wreckage of the battle, Undyne tearfully mourns Alphys.

Toriel defends Toriel's Academy For Gifted Youngsters from Kumulings while Asgore Dreemurr is bonding with Asriel Dreemurr. After a brief argument between Asgore and Toriel, a cold-faced Frisk enters and decides to leave, since the blobs have retreated. At Bête Noire's Hideout, Bête is still ill from HATE, which Bête describes as stronger than expected and has plans of its own, so she is doing her best to resist it. After the blobs return, Bête decides to wait for Frisk to come find her. She believes that she is more powerful with the SOULs the blobs ate, and that once she would kill Frisk, no one could stop her.

While Gaster and Papyrus rest in W. D. Gaster's House, Jessica uses the control panel to broadcast to Determino City inhabitants the safety protocols, such as how they should have assistance from a monster. She expresses her positive change of view of monsters, and after the broadcast, Jessica feels her SOUL cracking. A tired Undyne returns, regretful over Alphys's death. After Papyrus and Undyne enter a bedroom, Jessica attempts to reconcile with Gaster, but he chides her for her role in his lost ones's deaths, menacingly affirming that if Jessica was not Frisk's friend, she would be dead where she stands.

After the cold Frisk arrives and learns about Alphys, he goes to speak with Jessica in private, gifting her Alina Grey Rutrow's tutu and shoes. Jessica tearfully thinks about her daughter, thanks Frisk and calls him a kind child, but he denies it. Frisk goes to speak with Asriel in the field behind the house. Frisk confesses that he has been lying to him, and that this situation is his own fault. Much to Asriel's shock, Frisk explains that he had been searching for a method to reset since the Battle of New Home, and that none of this is suppose to be happening.

Frisk expresses that destroying the Reset button was his greatest mistake and that he feigned his promise to Sans, which was why he was furious. He believes that this mess will not end well unless he can reset. Furthermore, before attempting the Genocide Route, Frisk had experienced practically everything he could in his journey, experimenting with his decisions after every reset. After the reset during the Battle at the Last Corridor which caused the glitches, Frisk wanted to find a different ending, so in the Load Screen, he named Chara into "Frisk", activating Hard Mode. Chara was furious with Frisk for pushing the timeline to its limits, and after all, it was Frisk who fuelled Chara with HATE, unintentionally starting his erasure plot.

In the end, Frisk was satisfied with the ending he got, and he thought that destroying the Reset button would transport Frisk to his black screen while monsters would live in peace, but the world continues with Frisk in it, and breaking the button made Frisk unable to SAVE anymore. Frisk concludes that if he were to lose, then it will be game over for the universe. Believing only he can defeat Bête, Frisk intends to confront her, but he wants to reveal this if he loses. When Frisk apologizes for not being Asriel's perspective of a friend, Asriel tries to comfort him by saying they could wait.

Frisk insists to go alone, but when Asriel argues back, Frisk notes how Asriel had done similar actions. Asriel affirms that Frisk performed actions in his own will, and he could still feel love and he still almost killed the Underground. When Asriel states that Frisk will lose by fighting alone, Frisk coldly says that Flowey was not a "coward", breaking Asriel's heart, prompting him to run away in tears. Because of that insult, Frisk's LV increases from 1 to 2.

At nighttime, Frisk ponders about his previous deaths and how he might permanently die fighting Bête. Jessica calls the Determino City Police Department Chief Ronan Cass, who informs her that the Human Safety Organization has made a barrier around Determino City to prevent Bête from escaping. During their conversation, Jessica signs the peace agreement. In the morning, Frisk tries to head outside despite Toriel's objections. When Toriel insists Frisk to not go outside, he scars her hand with the Sword of Determination and cold-heartedly dismisses her, causing Frisk's LV to increase.

Asgore begins a meaningful conversation with Asriel, where Asriel confirms he is being troubled by his past. Asgore spells out how good people can commit bad actions, and that one of his greatest regrets was not comforting his old friend Roy Goldburn when he needed help. He educates that the best method to help friends is by being by their presence, even if they wanted to be alone. He also adds that the amount of mistakes made does not matter, but rather the amount of times they stand up. They cannot always make the right decisions, so they have to strengthen up to face the consequences of their choices, and since Asgore faces his consequences everyday, Asriel can do the same.

Gaster searches through files from the Anti-Monsters Department, and learns that when Asriel broke the Barrier after ending Chara's Uprising, HATE escaped from the Underground as well. Upon uncovering that the AMD captured HATE on the day monsters were freed, Gaster visits Undyne, Papyrus and Jessica for questioning. He tells Undyne that she has the highest chance of killing Bête, considering that she can create her own determination. When asked how she could not defeat Bête, Undyne answers that Bête got enhanced by a dark substance, which Gaster and Jessica deducts to be HATE. This intensifies Gaster's hatred for Jessica for keeping HATE in the first place, and him rebuking her causes the depressed Jessica to lose her Integrity.

In his room, Asriel struggles to move on from his past. He takes a nap on his table, and in his dream, Flowey speaks to him. Flowey believes that Asriel needs his help, to which Asriel denies. He tells Asriel that his emotions are weakening him, claiming that someone cannot fight a monster without becoming one. Trying to persuade Asriel to include Flowey's aid by reminding him of his dastardly past, Asriel declares that he refuses to lose his emotions again, because whenever he is disheartened, he will have friends by his side. When he gets the opportunity to protect them, it will be his love for them that will motivate him instead of power.

Asriel voices that not everything can be solved with kindness and that there is a lot of uninviting emotions in life, however, there are joyful moments that are worth living for. He concludes that he wants to feel happiness and love, and that maybe if he follows his emotions, the situation can be resolved. Flowey, though skeptical, agrees to observe the outcome of Asriel's choice, and Asriel accepts Flowey as a part of him. When he wakes up, Asriel has a blanket over himself and picks up his Heart Locket, where tear drops are present.

Papyrus talks with an upset Gaster, who asks Papyrus how he could forgive people despite their wrongdoings, questioning if he forgot about her involvement in the Assassination of Sans. Papyrus replies that he does dearly miss Sans, but he does not want to show his grief because he believes his friends value him for comforting them, but currently, it has been very difficult because everyone is sad. He announces that he do his best in comforting his friends. When Gaster states that some things cannot be fixed, Papyrus hands him his repaired mug as an example. Papyrus continues that a person forgiving someone does not mean the person is forgetting that someone's actions, and explains his idea that they should not deny someone's apologies when they themselves have made mistakes. Gaster responds that he does not feel ready to forgive Jessica yet, and after Papyrus advises him to give her a chance, Gaster says an agreement with him.

Frisk confronts Bête at the bottom of the Determino Canyon, and they begin duelling out, with Frisk struggling to defend himself. Fortunately, Asriel comes in to aid Frisk, however, he ends up having his SOUL stolen by Bête and Akumu. As he dies, Asriel tearfully apologizes to Frisk for interfering before turning into dust. Fuelled with vengeance for Asriel, Frisk accepts consequences and promises to kill Bête, ultimately increasing his LV to 19 and allowing him to fully open his eyes.

Filled with stronger determination, Frisk gains the upper hand in the battle while Bête uses HATE to heal herself. Not wanting HATE to take over herself, Bête uses HATE to resurrect an old friend of the shocked Frisk. Meanwhile, Gaster regains his blue eye and, along with Papyrus, sense something. Papyrus heads out to find the source of this sense, then Gaster, Asgore and Toriel head to where Frisk is, since the sense gave Gaster this knowledge. At the canyon, Frisk clashes with a HATE-infused Sans, and Frisk is saved by Papyrus, who is taken aback to see Sans.

Despite Frisk's insistence otherwise, Papyrus wants to resolve the fight with Sans peacefully. When Gaster, Asgore and Toriel arrive nearby, Bête traps herself, Frisk, Akumu, Sans and Papyrus inside a dome of HATE. Sans continues attacking Papyrus, he refuses to fight back. Before Sans could fatally stab Papyrus, the latter expresses his brotherly love and pleads for him to come back, leading to Sans having the strength the break free from HATE and destroy the dome.

Everyone is astonished by how Papyrus saved the unconscious Sans while Bête and Akumu retreat. Frisk questions Papyrus how he could decide not to fight knowing he would probably die, and Papyrus answers that even though not everything can be solved with kindness, but using this method, he managed to rescue Sans. He further says that when circumstances are at its worse, they have to grip onto their hopes, because that is when the situation would get better. Learning from Papyrus, Frisk explains that they can save Asriel by using the opposite of HATE, which is love. On the way home, Frisk finds his hand glitching, realizing that he is running out of time.

Trivia[]

  • This is the first episode of Glitchtale to be split into two parts.
  • When Camila Cuevas was animating the second part, she made a scene where Jessica Grey says: "For now, AMD won't exist anymore in this city." She decided to remove it before the release of the second part.
  • According to the first part of this episode, monsters can bleed.
    • This is because monsters who are eating and living by humans are now developing a physical form.
      • This is sort of a fusion reaction between the food and hints that monsters were eating human food that had meat in them.
  • W. D. Gaster saying "You'd be dead where you stand..." to Jessica Grey is a reference to a line Sans says to Frisk during their dinner together at MTT Resort in Undertale.
  • Camila Cuevas noted in a Tumblr post that the player in Undertale can gain more EXP by emotionally hurting the monsters before killing them.
  • HATE's regeneration ability is enough to create a new physical body for an alive SOUL.
    • This is what happens to Sans when Bête Noire used some of the HATE to resurrect him.
      • But this only applies to monsters. HATE is only able to create a new magical body for monster SOULs, and human bodies are not magical, so HATE's regeneration ability is not enough to create a new body for humans.[1]
  • By the time of the second part, when the Barrier broke and HATE was captured by the Anti-Monsters Department, this happened 37 days ago at 10:41 AM.
  • Frisk is planning to use the opposite of HATE for saving Asriel Dreemurr, which is known as love.
  • If you combine both of the parts's thumbnails, it forms a unique picture of Asriel stopping a fight between Frisk and Bête Noire.
  • Frisk only has LV 18 in the flashback where he meets Sans at the Last Corridor instead of LV 19 because Frisk is performing a Neutral Route at that time.
