"I had reached the darkest depths. So far down, I could have forgotten I had ever seen the sun. But even in that hopeless place, you were the light that helped me find the surface again."
―W. D. Gaster to Papyrus[src]

Doctor Wing Din Gaster is a renowned scientist, the father of Papyrus and Sans as well as the former royal scientist of both the Wizard Council and the Underground. Ten centuries after being banished to the Underground alongside monsters, Gaster investigated the abilities of Determination as a means to synthesize human SOULs to break the Barrier. Upon creating the CORE, his experiments led to him accidentally falling into the Void, where he spent ages in despair while observing the timeline. He watched Frisk's journey through the Underground, learning his ability to SAVE and that Frisk's Determination could restore Gaster into his home dimension. After Sans reseted during a moment he was not supposed to, it caused glitches in space time, allowing Gaster to escape from the Void and ambush Frisk to claim his power, but his desperate attempts were thwarted as he was killed by his son.

In the next timeline, Sans finally enabled his machine to rescue Gaster from the Void, restoring his powers and allowing him to make amends with Frisk. Together with Omega Flowey, they battled against a HATE-infused Chara, but the megalomaniac was victorious. While Asriel Dreemurr had a fight with Chara, Gaster reunited with Asgore Dreemurr, Toriel and Papyrus, as well as met the rest of Frisk's friends. After Asriel shattered the Barrier, monsters were freed and moved to the surface. During his first month in Determino, Gaster's scientific discoveries became acknowledged by the public, being awarded and permitted to expand the CORE for the district.

During his research on SOUL Traits, Gaster met Betty, who had a rare trait that was mostly unknown. Eventually, he discovered that she had the SOUL of Fear, and that she was a creature created to prevent peace between monsters and humans known as Bête Noire. Dismayed by the death of Sans, Gaster began planning to destroy Bête, and later, he made an uneasy alliance with Jessica Grey, who was involved in Sans's murder. Luring Bête at the CORE Expansion, Gaster used his immense powers to try and eliminate the creature, but to no avail. After Alphys was killed in an attempt to destroy Bête, Gaster further despised Jessica for being indirectly involved in Bête's HATE-enhancement. After Gaster had a conversation with Papyrus about forgiveness, he sensed that Sans had been resurrected, and later, he brought his weakened son to his lab to try and revive him.

Gaster was then requested by Frisk to send him into the Void, leading to Gaster and everyone in the timeline had their memories of Frisk erased, and Chara was given Frisk's place in their world. Using Undyne's determined blood, Gaster attempted to heal Sans, but his efforts were seemingly in vain. In the city, Gaster and Jessica faced against Kumuzilla and while they were trapped under the rubble, Gaster, out of his painful emotions, tried to allow Jessica to leave him behind, but she instead saved his life by sacrificing her own.

Filled with despair, Gaster began fighting Bête personally, and he was then aided by his two sons. However, after Sans died protecting them, Gaster was fuelled by pure rage, driving himself to draw power from within and Papyrus to obliterate Bête, brutally tearing her apart and striking blow after blow, until he stopped for Papyrus's sake. With that, Bête was finally killed, and Gaster fainted from exhaustion. While he was passed out, Chara saved Gaster and Papyrus from HATE, eventually slaying it for good. In the war's aftermath, Gaster consoled and encouraged Papyrus to never change from his kind personality. As years went by, Gaster continued to live happily as humans and monsters made their peace.

Yet Darker[]

Gistir

Gaster in Yet Darker.

This is the episode where he appears for the first time. In this episode, he plots to take Frisk's soul so he can come back to life.

After Frisk entered the Grey Room, he blocked their ability to reset. He proceeded to attack them with his black spikes. When Frisk attempted to leave, they noticed that the door was blocked by Gaster's spikes. Gaster then fires a Gaster Blaster at them. Instead of Frisk getting hit by the Gaster Blaster, Sans teleported in and blocked the attack. He then attempted to teleport themselves out, but nothing happened.

Yet Darker Gaster

In order to escape, Sans blasts open the door, and he and Frisk escaped from the grey room (killing a pink butterfly in the process). Gaster shortly left the grey room after them, partly materializing and becoming more powerful as a result.

Gaster Episode

Gaster attacking Sans.

Having returned to the real world, he summons his two of his hands. Sans knows that he cannot defeat Gaster, and attempts to take Frisk's soul as he did in the last timeline. Gaster interrupts, however, and he takes the soul instead, impaling Sans with a black spike. Frisk's Soul, about to be taken by Gaster, but it refuses to give in and escapes from Gaster towards Sans's hand. Sans then takes the soul and fights Gaster.

He eventually wins by destroying his hands one by one after his two hands get destroyed by gaster blasters, and he summons seven more. When the final hand is broken, a piece of his head along the lines gets cracked open. Gaster then says he just wants to come back and will do so by any means necessary. He attempts to kill Sans with a black spike, but Sans is quicker and stabs Gaster in his back with 2 bones. Sans proceeds to reset the timeline afterward using Frisk's Determination.[2]

Your Best Friend[]

Gistir2

Gaster as he battles Chara.

After Chara's return, Sans uses the device in his laboratory to resurrect Gaster. Due to the glitches, the device worked and Gaster is brought back to the real world and reunites with his oldest son on good terms. Sans then asked Gaster to bring them to the room where the six Souls were being kept and confront Chara.

Gaster used all seven of his hands to help protect Frisk while fighting Chara. However, he soon stopped protecting Frisk and instead decided to focus on damaging Chara. Chara tried to attack Gaster with one of their attacks, but Gaster put up a shield. Seeing this, Chara changed the direction of the attack and aimed for Frisk. As Frisk was unprotected, Sans teleported in to save them, but Gaster leaped in front of the blast, saving Sans and getting heavily injured.

Continue[]

Gaster didn't play a significant role in this episode, his only appearance was at the beginning talking with Undyne, and in the scene at the end where everyone looks at the sun on the surface.

My Sunshine[]

Gaster spitting out coffee.

Gaster is shown at the beginning, where Frisk is proud of every friend that they knew. When Frisk introduces Jessica, the head of the AMD, he expresses his surprise of her meeting a monster such as himself by spitting out his coffee. He explains how the core works, and how it'll help both humans and monsters since there will be no need for electricity bills with it to Miss Grey. Gaster is later shown to start researching the pink soul of Bete as soon as he found out that she had a pink Soul.

Dust[]

Gaster was shown taking a nap, but then Frisk came to Gaster and woke him up. He accidentally knocked his arm into his coffee mug, nearly smashing it. However, it was saved by Gaster's telekinesis, who then went to refill it while talking about how Bete is going to move somewhere else and a woman (who looks like similar to Agate Lightvale and was wearing similar clothes too) referred as her mother asked him if he could take care of Bete until things of her room get moved.

He then said to Frisk that he would read the story of two wizards that made the barrier.

Gaster after Sans's death.

Later, Asriel warned Frisk about the AMD cameras. He also told Frisk that Mettaton will do his first live report. Later in the episode, Asriel and Sans go to check and try to find out who is causing all these incidents. Gaster reads the story of the two wizards that made the barrier. Nothing in the text really hit home until he finally figured out what the pink soul was; the soul of Fear, but it was too late to warn Sans and Asriel, as they had encountered Betty and found out the hard way. Soon after, he feels in his soul that Sans died, and his blue eye dies out as a result.

Gaster was heartbroken when he realized Sans had sacrificed himself for Asriel. However, he gained 50% of his power back due to his death, but none of that really mattered to him, as he had just lost his son.

Do or Die[]

Gaster played a massive role in this episode. In the beginning, he talked with Frisk about how only one Determination and one Fear soul can exist at one time, and that only Determination can defeat Fear and vice-versa. He told Frisk that Fear is something that can be overcome. After hearing this, Frisk recovered his Determination. When they encounter a blob, Frisk attacks it while Gaster is watching, but eventually he intervenes, stating Frisk's attacks weren't strong enough. He moves to blast the blob with a massive hand, but it hallucinates the 2 of them into seeing Sans, and then Sans is bloodied and badly injured. This has a negative impact on Frisk's Determination, but Gaster doesn't hesitate and blasts the blob, reducing it to nothing.

Some time passed after the attack of the Kumulings, Undyne, Asgore, Papyrus, and Jessica Grey came to their house/lab. Gaster sees Miss Grey and attacks her with a hand, but Papyrus blocks the blast and told him that she feels sorry about Sans's death, thus making Gaster reluctantly "forgive" her.

Later in the Episode, Gaster, Miss Grey, and Alphys go to the Core. Gaster went into the Nullifier room where he used his special attack Duality that made all of his seven hands into two large hands, which are much stronger than his normal ones. The battle begins; both of them use all of their powers and fight each other to death. Gaster was insanely close to beating Bete when he activates his final attack, summoning a massive gaster blaster in combination with his 2 hands, but Bete uses Rhabdophobia and managed to take control of the two large hands and Gaster Blaster. Bete then stops Gaster with the 2 hands, using patience ropes and blasts him up. Gaster slams into the roof of the building and is rendered incapacitated. Bete then slams her spear through his soul while Gaster was on the ground, puncturing a hole in his soul. Gaster was saved by Dr. Alphys and Miss Grey and was teleported out by Alphys' teleporter alongside Jessica Grey.

Love Part 1[]

After experiencing a flashback from when he fell into the Void, Gaster regains consciousness outside the Nullifier room. He attempts to teleport back into the Nullifier Room to aid Alphys after learning she was alone in there, but is unable to due to the hole in his soul. After being told by Papyrus that Undyne was helping her, he notes that he is bleeding, and concludes that monsters gained physical matter overtime after being around humans and eating their food; because of this, Undyne would be able to contain Determination without melting as she fought Bete.

Despite being rescued by Jessica Grey, Gaster is very unfriendly to her because of her role in the deaths of his son Sans and of Alphys, explicitly mentioning that he would kill her if she weren't one of Frisk's companions.

Love Part 2[]

Gistir3

Gaster looking at the night sky.

After Gaster was mostly rehabilitated, he started getting some suspicious feelings about Jessica and went on her computer to check her stuff on the AMD program. He looked back to see if someone was watching behind him and then focused on the "Barrier Status" button. Clicking on it, he saw a recording that took place 37 days ago, seeing a black blob moving around at a fast speed and then covering up the camera. After that, he clicked to see the "Automatic Journal A.I" and was shocked seeing "Calling AMD director" in the Automatic Journal. For further information, he went to Undyne's chamber, asking her about her battle yesterday with Bete. Gaster figured out she's the one with the highest chance to kill "this creature".

He doesn't know how, but she is able to create her own Determination, which is Bête Noire's weakness. Shortly after, Gaster questioned, "Why couldn't you win?". Undyne said she got a power boost from a HATE vial. She was about to deal the fatal blow, but the substance made her regenerate all the damage she received and then retreated. Jessica hearing Undyne saying all those things made her look shocked and worried at the same time about what Gaster would do to her, Gaster crushed his pen in anger and almost rose an attack on Jessica, only for his soul to crack more due to overexertion.

Gaster then calmed down a bit and started talking about the AMD being the only place to contain magical substances. He told Jessica this and was quite sad that she didn't tell them she had that vial. He became increasingly upset when he said that she was the cause of Sans's death. He wished he'd never met Jessica Grey, making her soul grey, causing her to lose her hair color and half her eyes' color and making her cry. After that, Gaster went into a room and sat there thinking about Sans's death. He got interrupted by Papyrus asking him if it's okay for him to come in.

Screenshot28

Gaster's anger.

Without Gaster saying anything, he went in and sat back to back with him. Gaster, being confused, asked Papyrus, "how can you be such a good monster, no matter what anyone tells or does to you, you forgive them as if nothing happened." Saying that he got mad, asking him, "DID YOU NOT CARE? Did you just forget about him? Don't you feel a thing?" Papyrus, being a bit sad about what Gaster said, answered that he misses him as well, and there hasn't been a second of the day where he doesn't think about Sans. Papyrus said he couldn't let everyone else see him sad, because he knows they'll look up to him looking for someone to comfort them. And it has been difficult for him, everyone is worried and everyone getting hurt. Gaster, trying to talk, gets interrupted by Papyrus saying, "That just means I have to try twice as hard to make everyone smile again!". Gaster says, "Some things can't be fixed...". Papyrus answers that they can, showing Gaster that he fixed his mug, and tells Gaster he feels like Gaster is in no position to deny someone's apologies when they made so many mistakes as well.

Then, Gaster, giving up trying to fight Papyrus on the topic, said Papyrus won and that he will try to forgive Jessica. Papyrus was glad to hear that and asks Gaster if he got to see the stars last night. Gaster answered that he did and that they were beautiful. Long after that, during Bete's battle with Frisk, Bete "asked for help", reviving Sans and controlling Sans using the HATE. Gaster and Papyrus are shocked that they feel Sans come back to life, Gaster stating it's "impossible".

Gaster tries to teleport to where Sans was but failed because he was still weak and couldn't teleport yet. Papyrus ran to where Sans was, and Gaster started getting worried as he left the house, called for Toriel and Asgore to tell them where Frisk and Bete were fighting. Asgore was instantly convinced to go after them when he heard Toriel say she can't find Asriel and that she thinks he went after Frisk. Going after them, Gaster, Toriel, and Asgore saw the fight happening and that Sans and Papyrus were there. Bete, getting mad that others were interfering in, used the HATE to create a shield that would get later destroyed by Sans when his soul got cleaned from HATE. Gaster started crying a bit, seeing Sans back alive after he died. Toriel tried to heal Sans, telling Gaster that he had no injuries, but instead, he barely has any magic to keep his SOUL together, making Gaster believe he is in some sort of coma. Papyrus tried to cheer them up by saying he believes in Sans, and he will wake up.

My Promise[]

Gaster was first seen at the doorway after Asgore defeated a blob that Jessica was struggling with. He soon told Asgore that he, Papyrus, and Sans were going to go down to his lab, which was located in the Underground.

Sometime later, Gaster was seen either at the entrance to his lab or at one of his lab's rooms. He was trying to remember the password to a door and asked himself how he didn't recognize the area. He soon got hit with flashbacks of what happened at this place and his experiences in the Void. Papyrus concerningly asked him if he was ok and Gaster responded by telling him that he was fine and that he just saw some flashbacks. He then remembered the password and put it in, opening the door.

Screenshot-3

Gaster refusing Papyrus' help

Gaster then prepared a device in the room to check Sans's condition. While Papyrus was off getting a requested notebook and pencil, Gaster made the machine reveal his condition. The second Gaster saw his unconscious son's status; his expression became transfixed. Papyrus soon returned and asked what Sans's condition was and if he would be ok. Gaster lied that Sans should be ok. He asked for Papyrus to watch over Sans because he had to go research something. Papyrus offered to help, but Gaster persisted for him not to.

During a talk with Toriel, Asgore, and Undyne, Frisk apologized for what happened to Asriel. But soon, Gaster joined the conversation, claiming that they were not hopeless when it came to Asriel's status. After refusing to answer Asgore's question on Sans' condition, he told them that, if Bete didn't destroy or drain the souls that she collected, then Asriel's soul and the other souls that belonged to monsters had a chance at coming back. He was asked by Toriel if the children that blobs had killed could be revived. Unfortunately, according to his reply, the human children's souls were hopeless, due to their bodies being incapable of regenerating like how Sans's body was recovered. He explained that Toriel and Asgore had to free Asriel from Bete's control. Therefore, he soon decided for Frisk, Toriel, and Asgore to go to the arena. Once the group heard a bang coming from the outside, they decided to leave.

Gaster was later seen reading about Sans' real condition; fallen down. He was seen possibly trying to come up with a cure for his state. Once Asgore sat down while Toriel was attempting to heal him, Gaster looked concerned for him. Frisk later said that they wanted to talk with Gaster, so they then went to his lab, there, he asked Frisk for something, their determination. Frisk told them that they had found out about Gaster's multiple experiments and that they knew that one of them failed because it was supposed to be fueled with Determination, which is something Gaster didn't have back then. Frisk then said that they need Gaster to recreate what they tried to do by using Frisk's soul as a power source. Gaster then said Frisk was attempting to fix their "condition", Gaster agreed, but he warned Frisk that if they went to the Void, they would have little to no hope of return, especially considering that Frisk is glitched; however, Frisk doesn't seem to let Gaster's warning stop them. Gaster then proceeds with Frisk's request (in return for some Determination), saying that it will be very interesting. Gaster then wishes Frisk good luck before they were transported to the Void.

Game Over Part 1[]

Gaster appears with Asgore when Toriel and Chara feel the effects of Frisk being erased from the timeline. Gaster explains how he also has had memory disarray. He then excuses himself to work on his cure for Sans.

Soon after, Gaster is seen dripping Determination into vials of "Monster Soul Essence".

9F49BE23-72CD-4CD2-BF10-AB81A0B155AE

However, every single time, the vials explode, leading Gaster to almost entirely give up. Gaster then remembers about Undyne's Fight with Bete and goes to collect blood from the fight. He proceeds to test it with Undyne’s hair, matching up 100% showing that the blood belonged to Undyne. He appears back at the lab with a vial of "Monster Soul Essence" with the previously mentioned blood sample from Undyne inside the vial. Gaster mixes her Determination successfully, however the vial is close to breaking.

Gaster then is with Sans and injects Undyne’s blood with the Determination into Sans. However, Gaster's plan of curing Sans of his "Fallen Down" state does not work, since no one can "play god". Gaster then says that he made it that Sans will be awake to experience his death instead of passing in peace. Sans' bones are shown to be cracking, accompanied by Gaster saying he failed in every possible aspect. He only made it worse.

SSGTER

Later, after Jessica is called, Papyrus offers to accompany her. However, Gaster refuses to let Papyrus do so. Gaster summons his hands to trap Papyrus, but Papyrus uses his Blue Bones to hold Gaster in place. Having a flashback about his losing moment with Bete, Gaster screams in rage at Papyrus to let him go, then manages to escape but not before injuring himself. He then proceeds to snag Papyrus and throw him into a wall. Papyrus says his pain of being thrown into a wall was not as bad as Gaster lying to him. However, Papyrus realizes Gaster's pain and pities. Gaster says he doesn't deserve his pity and claims that he has only made mistakes so far. After Papyrus helps him, Gaster offers to accompany Jessica instead of Papyrus, if Papyrus was ok with it.

Game Over Part 2[]

Gaster firing monotone at big boi

Gaster firing Monotone at the Kumuzilla

Gaster first appears in this episode in a means of transport with Jessica Grey, on a train. Gaster wants to talk to Jessica about "many things", but cannot do so because he is tired. As such, Gaster takes a nap for the rest of the ride.

Though, Gaster does not appear again until later on into the episode, where he is seen standing with Jessica as she takes a call from Ronan. There Gaster is seen supposedly sensing a large cluster of magical energy moving. Kumuzilla appears before Gaster and Jessica while destroying buildings. Gaster and Jessica try to stop the Kumuzilla from reaching the school, along with other humans.

Then, Gaster and Jessica, unfortunately, get trapped under the rubble of a destroyed building while fighting the massive blob. Under the rubble, Jessica is able to move but Gaster is stuck under one of the boulders.

Jessica has a teleporter but then Gaster explains that the teleporter she has is only for one person. Gaster tells Jessica to leave without him, to which she first disagrees and attempts to get him out, but when she finally agrees, she shoves the teleporter into Gaster's hand, sacrificing herself for him. Gaster is lastly seen crying alone about Jessica's sacrifice. He shows anger and a strong desire for vengeance.

Ḣ̸͈a̷̞̽ẗ̵̥́e̸̟͒[]

Gaster appears sitting on the floor in Rave's lab and he seems confused about where he is, so he asks Rave. Rave soon founds that it's Gaster who also went along with Jessica. Rave's face appears pale and terrified, worried about why Jessica isn't with him. Also, Rave notices that the teleporting device was used by Gaster and also founds that the portal device was placed in the lab by her.

GH81

Rave asks Gaster about Jessica, as he looks back at him. He ignores Rave's question indirectly by mentioning a "Good news" that he has been promoted as the new leader of the place, recommending that Rave should mourn later and that he must do something. Gaster states that he can go to the Arena as a reinforcement, implying a desire to kill Bete.

R&GH

Rave recommends Gaster to rest because he is injured and recommends that he can handle it. Rave uses the Healing-Machine to heal Gaster's legs. After healing is complete, Gaster prepares to leave. At the moment Rave asks him what he is supposed to do with the monster, also uncomfortable with his new job, his face turns confused. Gaster looks at him and faces a flashback where Gaster is seen sitting on a royal chair, the time when he used to be the royal scientist, and when he was happy. He could compare the situation with Rave, saying to him he looks smart and that he must figure it out on his own.

Gaster blasting at Bete to save Toriel.

Gaster is able to arrive at the arena just in time to keep Bete from killing a grief-filled Toriel. After enduring some of his attacks, Bete flees through a hole on the wall. Gaster notices the critical condition Asgore is in and requests Toriel to help him and at least pretend to care for monsters before leaving to go after Bete.

The three, a family

Group hug

Once Gaster finds Bete, he sees that Sans and Papyrus have already arrived and attacked her. As the two waves at him, Gaster immediately feels immense guilt when seeing Sans, remembering that he injected him with Determination to try and keep him alive. However, Sans happily greets his father, making him smile. Papyrus then forms a hug with the two, before Bete gets up. She states that the family has her trapped in a chain, but that a chain is as strong as the weakest link. Right then, she immediately lunges for Papyrus. Before she could touch him, Papyrus knocks her away with a giant bone and into a building, allowing the fight to start.

Gaster shocked after Sans' second death

After a while, Bete is able to grab Papyrus, holding him with an inch of his life. Before more damage could be done, Sans is able to shoot her away with a Gaster Blaster. Gaster then notices Papyrus' wounds and begins to heal them. He then witnesses Sans create an entire wall of Gaster Blaster aimed at Bete. Gaster knew what this would do and begged Sans to stop, but it was too late. Bete then took them over with Rhabdophobia and aimed every one of them at Sans. As they fired, Gaster used his to giant hands to surround his son in order to protect him. However, they soon break, leaving Gaster greatly injured. Bete then aims the controlled Blasters towards him and Papyrus, but Sans is able to overpower them with even more.

As Gaster comes to, he sees Sans melting, asking if he and Papyrus were okay. He then fades to dust, and his soul shatters. As Papyrus cries, Gaster is left with a horrified expression from his son now dying twice. As memories begin to resurface, Gaster deflects another one of Bete's attacks. He then begins to use Papyrus' magic, draining his soul in the process. As Gaster takes more of his magic back from Papyrus and dodging all of Bete's attacks, he regains access to Polychromatism, his most powerful special attack. Claiming it was now his turn, Gaster lets out a roar of hostility and summons many small hands, two big hands, and an enormous Gaster Blaster.

Gaster using his polychromatism

Gaster using Polychromatism out of rage

Wanting to avenge Sans more than anything, Gaster rips Bete in half, impales her with purple spikes, crushes her, and blasts her multiple times. However, Papyrus notices that Gaster is destroying his own soul, so he screams at him to make him stop. He ceases his attacks for Papyrus' sake, returning magic to Papyrus and ceasing the strain on his soul. After looking at what's left of Bete Noire, Gaster falls on his knees, saying how tired he is before falling unconscious.

Hope[]

Papyrus carries Gaster to a hospital after he fell unconscious in the previous episode, then after he wakes up he talks to papyrus about hope and how he doesn't need to be a strong fighter to be successful, in great contrast to how his father treated him, and how Papyrus' hands were made to bring bonds closer together instead of tearing things apart.

After the end credits Gaster presumably went into a room where he is sitting, facing a melted version of himself using polychromatism.

Personality[]

During his time in the Void, Gaster had lost most of his sanity and had become rather violent and ruthless. He was willing to even kill monsters and humans in order to gain a SOUL and return from the Void, including his own son, Sans.

After the events of Yet Darker, Gaster's sanity had been recovered and he'd gained a rather kind and friendly demeanour.

Gaster is shown to be very serious and caring about his family although he didn't have a good relationship with his parents. He is shown to love and care about Sans and Papyrus, for example.

After the events of Dust, Gaster became vengeful and angry at the loss of his son Sans. He had a deep grudge with Jessica Grey since she had helped Bête Noire.

During the events of Love, particularly when Sans returned, he felt his reappearance and rushed along with Papyrus to the battle of Frisk and Bete.

After Papyrus managed to free Sans from Bete's control and with Sans in his severely weakened state, Gaster took Sans to his lab and found that he'd fallen down. In order to try and save him, Gaster began to experiment with Determination in order to revive Sans.

Realizing that Determination helped Undyne live through the battle she had with Bete, he rushed to the scene and collected bits of Undyne's hair and blood in order to test for signs of Determination. After finding that the results matched, he rushed to combine the blood and pure Determination to inject into Sans. Much to his dismay, the results ended in Gaster finding out that what he'd done wouldn't allow Sans to have a peaceful death. It would cause him to be fully awake during the experience.

After Jessica's death, Gaster now had even more of a grudge against Bete with an iron will to kill her.

Gaster and other monsters' memories[]

Screenshot 7

Only Sans and Asgore remember who Gaster actually was. He is Sans and Papyrus' father, but Papyrus only knows him as "Sans's friend". The other monsters are confused as to where Gaster came from, but they don't question it either. To them, he's just another monster that not many people knew about.

Powers and Abilities[]

Gaster is a boss monster, and thus he is much stronger than an average monster. After having his children, Sans and Papyrus, Gaster is only at 50% power. His eyes normally glow purple, but after he had his children, they glow red and blue, in accordance to how many children are alive. After sans' death, Gaster became arguably the most powerful monster on the surface; Bête Noire was only able to defeat him by catching him off guard with Rhabdophobia, and even after absorbing many more souls, HATE, and merging with Kumu, she was still extremely wary of him with only 50% power. Gaster could have killed her with only the power he gained from Sans' second death now that he knew about Rhabdophobia, but he chose to drain Papyrus's power as well, nearly killing them both in the process.

Powers[]

  • Boss / Monster Physiology: Gaster has the characteristics of monsters, more specifically of a skeletal one like his father and two sons. To an extension, he is also a Boss Monster, having more supernatural traits to him.

Abilities[]

  • Gaster Blaster: Gaster can summon a magic skull blaster that fires a magic laser.
  • Telekinesis: Gaster can manipulate the gravity of a person, soul, or object, and move it around at will.
  • Magic Absorption: Right when Gaster was about to brutally kill Bête, he started absorbing magic from Papyrus' soul and slowly killing him. Giving magic to himself to supply his weakened magic.
  • Healing Magic: Due to being a monster, Gaster has the ability to heal others. Such as Papyrus when Bête crushed him.
  • Chromas: Gaster has this special type of magic known to monsters as "Chromas": This type of magic allows the user to use a bit of magic with each trait known. He expresses this magic by summoning up to seven magic Hands with holes in them (corresponding to the holes in his hands). The hole fills with the color of the magic he wants to use, he can also use chroma magic directly from his normal hands. If one of Gaster's children is alive, he can only summon six hands.
    • Shown in Yet Darker, Gaster can make each hand have a different chroma and can make all the hands blast a rainbow beam together, this beam follows the opponent and can be split apart into projectiles.
  • Monotone: This is a special ability where he makes all his hands use one chroma, making it seven times more powerful. He uses it with Patience in Your Best Friend, and Determination in Game Over Part 2. If one of Gaster's children is alive, he can only summon six hands, multiplying the power by six; he is also limited to this as his most powerful attack if both children are alive.
  • DUALITY: Gaster summons two giant hands, and one Gaster Blaster. He is limited to this as his most powerful attack if only one of his children are alive.
  • Polychromatism: Gaster's most powerful attack. He summons two big hands, one giant Blaster, and seven smaller hands. His real limit is seven giant hands and one Blaster, but it is too taxing on him, so he uses this instead. This ability is only available if Gaster has all his power (aka if both his children are dead or if he forcefully takes his magic back from them).

Former Abilities[]

Teleportation: During the experiment that led to him falling into the Core, Gaster and his son Sans both gained the ability to teleport themselves and others. However, Gaster lost this ability after being defeated by Bête in Do or Die. He is unable to regain this ability.[4]

Tentacles: When Gaster was in the void, he could use black tentacles to stop Frisk from resetting, trap Frisk, impale Sans and take Frisk's soul. Though, when Gaster left his room, he could still use the black tentacles shown in Yet Darker, though he is shown to not use this anymore up to this episode.

Trivia[]

  • In Undertale, W. D. Gaster was the Underground Royal Scientist before Alphys, responsible for creating the CORE and said to have disappeared. Characters such as Gaster Follower 2 hint at his existence. In particular, Gaster's Followers relay various explanations as to what happened to Gaster. One iteration says that he "fell into his creation," another says that "his experiments went wrong," and the last one says he "shattered across time and space." Similar to Sans and Papyrus, he speaks in a typeface different from the other characters.
  • When Gaster was in the Void, he learned the world he knew was a game.
  • In the end, Gaster was the one to kill Bete despite stating himself and having read that only Determination could defeat Fear.[6]
    • He also ended up being much crueler in killing her than she was when trying to kill him.[7]
    • He used so much brute force that it likely messed Papyrus and himself up[8]
    • It is not known why Gaster didn't get any Hate in his soul when he killed Bete as he hated her so much for killing Sans (however indirectly) however it can be argued that he experienced rage rather than Hate.
  • Until My Promise, where he starting getting flashbacks, Gaster didn't remember what it was like being in the Void.[9]
  • Since the beginning of Season 2, Gaster hadn't slept.[10] At least until he fell asleep in Animosity from exhaustion.
  • Despite Camila's statement, Sans did call Gaster "dad" in Don't Forget.... Although, this was most likely to let the audience know of their biological connection.
    • It is unknown how Gaster had his two children, as he and them are the only skeleton monsters.
  • According to a Tumblr post,[11] Bete was looking for something in the Core.
  • Gaster knows and remembers every timeline.[12][13]
  • In a post, Camila has released a GIF of My Promise that features Gaster.
  • When Sans died in "Dust", Gaster's blue eye disappeared and Gaster took back 50% of his powers. This makes Gaster stronger, not weaker. If Papyrus dies, Gaster will take 100% of his powers back and will have extraordinary power. At the same time, a special ability called "Polychromatism" will be available.
    • However as shown in Animosity, Gaster doesn't need his sons to die in order to take back his powers, he can always drain their souls in order to use his abilities, or he can drain their souls only in times when he experiences pure rage.
  • Gaster is a boss monster.[14]
  • Gaster cares about Asgore.[15]
  • Gaster is one of Camila's favorite characters, just like Sans.[16]
  • Gaster practically won the battle with Bete in Do or Die, the only reason he almost died was because of Bete's Rhabdophobia ability.[17]
  • Gaster knows that the timeline will be erased if Frisk dies.[18]
  • Camila confirmed that Gaster hates Jessica to death.
  • Gaster's soul has a hole and because of that, he can not use any magic and abilities until his soul fully recovers.[19]
    • The hole was caused by Bete when she stabbed Gaster in Do or Die.
  • While he was in "The Void", Gaster learned the ability to block both the RESET and CONTINUE button.
  • Gaster's usage of black goop for attacking and blocking Frisk's ability to RESET in "Yet Darker" bears some resemblance to Chara's usage of HATE. The reason for that, and whether Gaster was using HATE, its unknown.
  • Gaster knew that only Determination could defeat Fear, but the revenge blinded him from common sense making him not care about this fact and only wanting to exterminate Bete. However, it is possible for him to kill her. In Hate, Gaster regains the feeling of anger to fight Bete.
  • "Gaster" is actually his last name.
  • The Gaster family was a noble family.
  • When Bete damaged his soul in Do or Die, it triggered Gaster's flashbacks of the Void. And, ever since that, he has been questioning stuff that he hasn't questioned before.[20]
  • In Yet Darker, Gaster's purple attack copies his opponents attacks, however, this was simply the void messing with his power. In reality, they shoot spikes out of his hands.[21]
  • Despite his claim that Bete was the first of her kind, this is not true, since the spell that created her had to have been used before to be able to deem it dangerous enough to forbid it.
  • Gaster lost his ability to teleport after his fight with Bete, and it cannot be recovered.
    • Gaster is unable to regain his ability to teleport. [22]
  • He is unable to use his purple chroma (or summon a seventh hand) when at least one of his children are alive
  • It was revealed by Camila, that Gaster's cracks on his face were a result of the Human vs. Monster War.
  • Gaster was alive when Toriel and Asgore separated.[23]
  • Gaster's Parents and Ancestors were warriors for their kingdom.[24]
  • Gaster didn't have a good relationship with his family.[24]
  • Gaster's dad has the same power that Gaster does.[25]
  • Gaster's siblings did not possess Chroma Magic. But they were still incredibly strong and served as Royal Guards and Personal Guards for their kingdom.[26]
  • Gaster understood that his best friend, Asgore had to murder 6 children for the sake of his people, but he didn't agree to Jessica previously being Bete's accomplice.[27]
  • If Gaster lost his red eye, rather than his blue one, he would still have access to Duality.[28]
  • Gaster was trying to create/use artificial human souls when monsters were still trapped underground. [29]
  • Gaster was the only monster in his family to possess both Chroma Magic and Gaster Blasters.
  • Gaster was best friends with Shane Goldburn.[30]
  • Gaster does not have his blue eye despite Sans waking up at the end of Game Over Part 2 because Sans is dead, but Determination is keeping him alive.
  • In Game Over: Part 2, Gaster knew that he wasn't ready to forgive Jessica. When he said those words it was more of a way to make her leave, it wasn't a heartfelt forgiving moment, and Jessica felt that which is why her hair didn't go back to blue when she heard the words she's been wanting to hear for past days. He said it so he could feel a bit better about dying under the rubble because the guilt over everything else was eating him inside. Jessica noticed this but kept it to herself, and so, waited for the last second to do her move. Jessica knew Gaster wouldn't forgive her, at least not that fast. What gave Jessica's trait back, in the end, was, despite Gaster not forgiving her, she still did what was right and made up to her own mistakes doing the ultimate sacrifice. These were the true intentions of that scene.[31]
  • In Gaster's early life, Gaster didn't have a good hold of his powers; he only began training after he joined the wizard council.[32]
    • Gaster would train with Asgore but often hurt him in the process.
  • Gaster was friends with all the wizards.[33]
    • Gaster was also a member of the Wizard Council.[34]

Easter Eggs[]

These are some easter eggs caught in some of Gaster's scenes in Wingdings.

Love Part 1 Easter Egg[]

Easter Egg Gaster 2

When the wingdings on the screen are translated, a system message appears about "The Experiment".

"CORE OVERHEATING LEVEL 96% "OVERHEATING AT %21 SHUTTING DOWN CORE CHAMBERS OVERHEATING AT: 80% DETERMINATION FUEL: 7% EXPERIMENT STATUS: FAILED

- SPACE AND TIME REALITY WASN’T COMPROMISED. SOULS WERE NOT COMPROMISED CONTAINERS STABLE.

My Sunshine Easter Egg[]

Easter Egg Gaster

When the wingdings on the screen are translated, some information can be learned.

" The Barrier was created by 7 Human wizards, it explains why we only need the equivalent to/or 7 human souls to open it. I've been reading human history so I get more information about its creation and see if I find something useful."

" All children seem to divide within the basic traits known...However only Frisk has a determination soul and its % is higher than usual."

" The CORE will be the main source of power for the city it's expansion is already effective in some places. I'm figuring out why is the CORE related to resets. Tho is unclear. I think it might be my fault."
