"You fail to realize, that for me... This is just the beginning. But for you... It's Game Over."
Bête Noire to Chara

Game Over is the sixth episode of the second season of Glitchtale.

Plot[]

In a different timeline, Asriel Dreemurr wakes up after his nap on his table. His Heart Locket is not on his drawer, and later, he is killed while trying to help Frisk. Afterwards, he is resurrected by Bête Noire, brainwashed using HATE, and has his memories of Frisk being rewritten. Chara goes to Toriel's House to pick up Asriel's Heart Locket before facing him off in Determino City.

In the middle of the Battle of Determino City, Chara shows Asriel his locket to try and save him from HATE's control, but since Chara had destroyed his own locket, Asriel sees this as a betrayal and impales the heartbroken Chara, killing him. Chara is then sent to the Void, and due to him being the "player" figure of the universe, his death starts the erasure of the timeline. Regaining his Determination, Chara enters one of the memory frames and travels back in time.

He arrives at the moment Asriel Dreemurr is sleeping and dreaming about his conversation with Flowey. Chara enters through the window, covers Asriel with a blanket, and places his Locket on the drawer. His tears drop near the locket as Chara hopes that in this timeline, Asriel can be saved. Chara is then erased from existence, along with his timeline. Asriel wakes up and picks up the locket before leaving. Noticing a different outcome in the course of events, the game that is entirely reality creates a second timeline where two lockets exist at the same time.

In this new timeline, Chara wakes in his bedroom in W. D. Gaster's House. He and Toriel have a reunion that they could not understand, since their memories are rewritten. Neither Chara or W. D. Gaster remember their actions in W. D. Gaster's Laboratory, and Gaster notices a vile of Frisk's blood in his pocket, though he does not remember Frisk. Chara explains that he needs to get something from Toriel's House to save Asriel, and they decide to rest first.

In his first lab, Gaster tries to use Frisk's blood of determination on monster SOUL essence, but they are incompatible. Becoming desperate to heal Sans, Gaster injects chemically mixed determined blood of both Frisk and Undyne into the dying skeleton, but unfortunately, it worsened Sans's condition, much to Gaster's utter dismay. The next day, in the middle of Determino City, Undyne and police force fight against Kumulings. She and Ronan Cass become friends, and the latter gets a call informing him of someone's arrival, much to his irritation.

They go to Toriel's Academy For Gifted Youngsters to meet with Rave Rutrow, the person Ronan finds irritating. Ronan assumes Rave wants to offer his magic weapons even though it is against the rules, but Rave wishes to speak to Jessica Grey. At the laboratory, Jessica receives a call from Ronan, who informs that Rave intends to directly speak with her. Jessica puts on one of Toriel's robes, which are oversized for her, much to her embarrassment. Papyrus and Gaster have an argument about the former wanting to help Jessica and civilians, which results in Gaster snapping. He then admits to Gaster that he knows about Sans's condition, and how people have prevented him from being involved in conflict.

Papyrus assures Gaster that he does not want him to suffer alone, and that he can help him, but Gaster does not believe he deserves help, since he feels that he has been making mistakes, but Papyrus comforts him anyway, saying that the only mistake he could make is not seeking help. Gaster decides to leave with Jessica while Papyrus protects the lab. Chara, Asgore Dreemurr and Toriel leave the lab while civilians are gathered at the Determino City Arena. Bête Noire and Asriel prepare for their next battle, as Bête believes humans and monsters would end up destroying each other if she does not destroy them first.

In the Arena, Mettaton EX receives a call from Asgore, who informs him about Alphys's death and that they will arrive at the Arena soon. At Toriel's house, Chara obtains the other Heart Locket in Asriel's room, and Asgore consults him that Asriel will listen to his best friend, giving Chara the feeling they will not fail this time. In the Anti-Monsters Department van heading to the school, Gaster and Jessica feel awkward with each other.

At the perimeter, Ronan elaborates on Rave's authority to Undyne. Rave has been advancing technology throughout their era, but he has been interested in mixing human magic with weapons. In the past, Noah Rutrow, who was the husband of Jessica and Rave's older brother, had command over the city. After Noah's death, Jessica succeeded in his position, since Rave was too young at the time. Ronan suspects Rave holds a grudge against Jessica for not looking after Alina Grey Rutrow in the end.

Rave asserts to Jessica that he and his people should help to prevent more casualties, but Jessica responds that she would be blamed if Rave's people die in action. This prompts Rave to remind Jessica about Alina, showing that he is not confident she could look after the city. He will await to be ordered by her, and states that he will be in charge over the city after Bête Noire's War. Jessica decides to scout the city with Undyne and Gaster's aid.

Inside the Arena, Mettaton mourns Alphys as his friend, Isabelle, tries to comfort him. A magic barrier seals the Arena, but Bête manages to break through and slaughters soldiers that try to attack her. Mettaton rescues Seth before being thrown inside by Bête. Luckily, Mettaton receives his Mettaton NEO Armor from Isabelle, allowing him to gain more powers to engage in combat. Meanwhile, Papyrus watches over Sans, whose body is starting to crack. Fear Blobs begin attacking the house, and Papyrus, wanting to prove himself worthy to his friends, Papyrus uses his best efforts and power to fend off the blobs. After using his special attack, which is to summon multiple, giant bones, Papyrus is restrained and stabbed, but he uses Gaster Blasters to blow up the house to save himself.

In their battle, Bête utilizes Mettaton's inexperience in fighting to her advantage, and when she tries to deal the finishing strike, Muffet and Grillby arrive and save Mettaton. Bête nearly defeats the two newcomers, but Mettaton uses himself to power a Spotlight to fire at her. This hardly hurts Bête due to the lack of energy, so she destroys the Spotlight. Despite being heavily injured, Mettaton continues to try and intervene Bête until Chara strikes her with the Sword of Determination. After Mettaton, Muffet and Grillby retreat, Chara and his adoptive parents face off against Bête and Asriel.

While scouting the city, Ronan perceives that Undyne is emotionally troubled and tries to console her, saying that for humans, their emotions helps them perform their duties better. Although their magic weakens when they feel pain, they should use their grief as energy to fight and prevent others from experiencing this pain. Undyne thanked him, and they then encounter Ronan's son, Hugo Phenix, Zachary and Zachary's Mother, who explains that her son is blind, but can sense magical energy. Zachary warns them that something is lurking under the streets.

Suddenly, there is rumbling around the roads and a gigantic, building-sized Kumuling known as the Kumuzilla emerges and rampages around the city. Reinforcements struggle to fight against the Kumuzilla and the other Kumulings, and when Undyne fails to throw a spear to save Ronan, he is saved by Hugo, and in turn, Ronan takes a hit from a Kumuling for his son. The Kumuzilla then strikes a building, sending rubble to fall onto Gaster and Jessica, trapping them underneath.

Jessica wakes up Gaster, whose lower body is entrapped under parts of the rubble. As the rubble begins to collapse on them, Jessica takes out one of Alphys's Gadgetries to teleport them out, but unfortunately, it can only be used by one person. Despite Gaster's pleas, Jessica tries to help him, and he questions why she is nice to him after he had been chiding her for his failures. Jessica does not relent, and Gaster lies that he forgives her to try and motivate her to leave. When she appears to be leaving with the teleporter, Jessica places it in Gaster's hand before telling him to give Bête "hell" for herself, thus regaining her Integrity. A dismayed Gaster is teleported away, and Jessica remains to get crushed to death by the rubble. She then wakes up in the afterlife, where she tearfully reunites with Noah and Alina, promising that they will be together forever.

At the arena, Bête explains her motives to Chara, that she believes she is destroying humans and monsters to prevent them from destroying each other in an inevitable war. Bête continues that she will eradicate the city, and after she would kill all monsters, she would have conquer Earth with every human fearful of her. Adding on her taunts, Bête claims that for her, this is the beginning, but for them, she pauses first. Gaster, in more inner anguish, is driven to avenge Jessica, Papyrus is still injured at the laboratory, Undyne tries to protect Ronan and Hugo, Asgore, Toriel and Chara prepare to attack Asriel, and Sans wakes up in shock. Bête concludes, in a horrific smile, that it is game over.

Trivia[]

  • This is the second episode of Glitchtale to be split into two parts, following Love.
  • Camila Cuevas published this episode's introduction sequence on June 3, 2018.[1]
  • Camila Cuevas confirmed on July 30, 2018, that this episode would be split into two parts.[2]
  • Prior to the release of the following episodes Ḣ̸͈a̷̞̽ẗ̵̥́e̸̟͒, Animosity and Hope, Camila Cuevas hinted a possible chance of Sans's demise, or if he will have a more major role.
  • During Jessica Grey's arrival in the Afterlife, the background and setting may be a reference to in an anime when they have bubbles and bright backgrounds during a romantic or emotional scene.
  • This is the first episode of the second season of Glitchtale where Frisk does not appear.
  • Two of this episode's tracks, Eschatology and Eschatonphobia, seem to be hinting at the "end of all things".
  • The events of this season has been taking place in the second timeline, commonly referred to as "Timeline 2".
    • "Timeline 1" was the same as "Timeline 2", up until Chara lost to Asriel Dreemurr.
  • According to the episode's introduction sequence and Camila Cuevas's statements, the entirety of the second is not the original Glitchtale timeline. The original timeline got erased due to Asriel killing the "main character", which in this case is Chara. But, through his Determination, he managed to enter an old-point in the timeline and leave the Heart Locket from his timeline there for Asriel Dreemurr to take, with hopes that this might be a turning point in the future. The second season is the second timeline. Both timelines are exactly the same up to the point where Chara fights Asriel, except that in the second timeline, there are two lockets instead of one.
  • The first part of this episode is the first one where Bête Noire and Asriel do not play major roles.
  • At the end of the first, Bête states "They're doomed to make the same mistakes", which is a direct callback to the music video "Scared Of Me".
  • The last seconds of the end of the second part signify teasers for the next episode. W. D. Gaster turns his eye red while crying, Papyrus clings onto life, Undyne takes a stand against the gigantic Kumuzilla, Asgore Dreemurr and Toriel are preparing to fight, Asriel takes out his Chaos Saber, Chara prepares his sword and knife of determination, and Sans wakes up in terror.
  • Gaster’s right eye is shining red at the end of the episode. His blue left eye seems to be gone, which would mean that Sans has died.
    • The determination that is injected into Sans is what is keeping him alive, and he is no longer connected to Gaster.
  • Although Veir is credited as a co-writer, Camila Cuevas confirmed he was only a story consultant and that he had coerced her to credit him as one.[3]
