"The best way to help your friends is being there for them. Even if they don't want you near them. It doesn't matter how many mistakes you've made. It's the amount of times you get back up the ones that count. We can't always make the right choice, so we just have to be strong enough to face the consequences from our decisions. I face the consequences of my actions everyday. I believe you can do the same, son."
―Asgore Dreemurr to Asriel Dreemurr[src]

King Asgore Dreemurr is the King of monsters and the father of Asriel Dreemurr. As a member of the Wizard Council, Asgore was titled as the Prince of Kurago until humans waged war against monsterkind and banished them into the Underground, where he established a new kingdom for his subjects. Many centuries later, he and his wife, Toriel, had a son and eventually adopted Chara, a human child who had fallen into the Underground and became best friends with Asriel. Unfortunately, both of Asgore's children passed away in a tragedy, leaving the King bereaved and enraged, motivating him to declare humans as enemies and that every human who fell into the Underground shall die and have their SOULs claimed to destroy the Barrier.

For the course of almost two centuries, the lonely ruler of monsters had forced himself to assassinate human children he encountered, and out of the blue, Asgore discovered his biological son resurrected as a Golden Flower, but these memories were erased once Flowey had utilized the SAVE function. Finally, Asgore was approached by Frisk, the eighth fallen human, who chose to give MERCY to the King despite his denies. In the True Pacifist Route, he was met by his ex-wife and Frisk's friends before the Battle of the Underground occurred. With the Barrier finally shattered, Asgore, his new friends and his people, migrated to the surface of Earth, finding peace among humanity.

However, this peaceful ending was undone by Frisk when he reseted the timeline, making its inhabitants relive a series of different routes of Frisk's journey through the Underground. Eventually, the final Reset allowed monsters to be freed once again to the surface, but this time, Asgore was reunited with Asriel and his old friend, W. D. Gaster. Integrating with humanity with prosperity in spite of the Anti-Monsters Department throughout the first month, Asgore then confessed the murder of six human children, but this situation was discarded once Determino was entrapped in a violent conflict initiated by Bête Noire. Asgore fought alongside Frisk, his allies and human armed forces against the malevolent spell construct and his HATE-infused son, and in the midst of it, Asgore and everyone else had their memories of Frisk erased and altered. With Chara resurrected, Asgore and Toriel gave it their all to attempt to destroy Bête, but to no avail until she was finally killed by Gaster. Years after making amends with his ex-wife, Asgore was content with the peace between humans and monsters in Meropos.

Biography[]

Continue[]

Asgore appears as a shadow at the beginning of the episode, but later he appears with all of Frisk's friends and he was seen standing near Toriel and his son, Asriel.

My Sunshine[]

In My Sunshine, Asgore is shown to be taking care of the political meetings even though Frisk has accepted as the ambassador, unsurprisingly though, Asgore seems to be under heavy observation by the AMD.

Asgore confessing his murder of six innocent children at the HSO HQ.

Near the end of the episode, Asgore is at the HSO HQ where people will sign that monsters can live with humans and have the same rights, but one question was never answered: "How did the barrier break?" Asgore answers honestly and says that he used the souls of the humans to break the barrier, then, Asgore is questioned further, being told to describe what the last human that fell down looks like, later to be revealed as Jessica's daughter, Alina. After this rather abrupt discovery, Jessica was quickly filled with grief and anger, once she figured out her daughter died to Asgore's hands, and as a result, she ended up not signing the Peace Treaty.

Asgore is shown to be behind bars for the murder of six humans, Asriel said that Asgore wasn't being completely honest, and didn't tell the AMD that he wasn't the one who destroyed the barrier for the sake of protecting him.

Asgore is still behind bars but there seems to be a visitor, Jessica Grey, in this scene, Mrs. Grey told Asgore that Sans died because of Bete and how she wanted forgiveness.

Later in the episode, Asgore is seen near the buttercups, liking the golden flowers so much that he didn't notice the racket of Gaster attacking Jessica with a gaster blaster while Papyrus blocked the attack for her. Later, Asgore asks if he could come with Frisk and Asriel, and after being teleported by Gaster to the school he quickly asks Asriel if he wants to play catch after they do what they have to do, with Asriel quickly accepting the offer. After that, they went inside the school and help kill the Kumulings.

Love[]

Part 1[]

Asgore does not play a big role in this episode as he appears at the school in this episode with Asriel to help the school children and destroy the pink creatures. Asgore then encounters Toriel and after a little controversy, it is ended by Asriel.

Part 2[]

SSAGR4

Asgore with Toriel after Frisk had hurt her.

While Toriel was mentioning how she hasn't seen Frisk's smile in a while, she was trying to make Asriel change his mind about going outside. Asgore was sitting beside the wall watching everything happen and at one point he asked if everything is okay. Toriel answers that Frisk wants to go out but she won't let him go because it's too dangerous. After he received the answer, Asgore asked why Frisk would want to go outside, Toriel getting a bit mad answered that it doesn't matter and Frisk won't go outside. Frisk seemed to have been already railed up and summoned his sword at Toriel, making her say he would be grounded the entire month if he doesn't put it down. Then, Asgore tried to interfere, but Toriel refused, telling Frisk he will go with Toriel upstairs at that moment and not let him go outside. Frisk started dropping a tear when he heard that and got mad, right after that, he scratched Toriel's hand with his sword, making her bleed. After that, Frisk mentioned that he's not her child and she's not his mother and left, causing Toriel to start crying.

Short After, Asgore went outside where Asriel was, Asriel says sorry to Asgore and that he doesn't feel like playing catch today. Asgore answered that he knows, and he just wants to talk with him and that he won't force Asriel to talk. Asgore started talking about how when he and Toriel saw him the first time, they had so many questions, but Asriel told them to not ask him about them and telling Asriel that he has a feeling that whatever happened in the past, it comes back to haunt him, and that's why Asriel is so troubled. Asriel answering as he said, he can't talk about it. Asgore trying to comfort Asriel saying that even the good people do bad things sometimes and that he knows it better than most. Asgore saying that one of his biggest mistakes is not being there when a friend needed his help, saying that if he talked to him that day, maybe things would've changed.

Screenshot32

Asgore also mentioned that the best way to help your friends is to be there for them even if they don't want you near, "it doesn't matter how many mistakes you made, it's the amount of times you get back up the ones that count, we can't always make the right choice, so we just have to be strong enough to face the consequences from our decisions". Asgore mentions after that sentence that he faces the consequences of his decisions every day and that he believes Asriel can do the same, making Asriel cry and running towards Asgore to give him a hug and thanking him, after Asriel asks what was his friend's name, Asgore asks why he wants to know and Asriel asking that he was curious and how Asgore never told him stories about him when he was younger. Asgore then answers that his name was Roy and that's a story for later.

My Promise[]

After a creature stabbed Jessica, Asgore managed to toss his trident at it, destroying it.

SSAGR3

Asgore telling Toriel to attend to Jessica's wounds.

He told Toriel to heal Jessica, and Gaster told him that he was going to go to his lab in the underground with his two sons. Asgore replied by telling him to go do so but to come back once he was done.

A few scenes later, while Toriel was attending Jessica's wounds, Asgore asked Toriel how Jessica was doing. She replied by telling him that she wasn't positive if she would heal Jessica because her soul was cracking. Soon, Jessica's phone was ringing. Asgore picked it up. The person on the phone was Ronan who wanted to talk to Miss Grey. Asgore told him that she couldn't talk with him at the moment because she was hurt and they were trying to heal her. Because of this, Ronan became concerned and questioned what happened to Jessica, causing Asgore to explain to him what happened. Asgore soon told him that there needed to be some sort of counterattack and Ronan asked if he should gather his men to set a perimeter around the arena and the school. Although Toriel shows obvious disagreement towards this idea, Asgore agreed to do it anyway, causing her to argue with him a little more.

The screen later cut to Frisk explaining to Asgore, Toriel, and Undyne that Bete was never a well-intentioned individual, to begin with. Asgore then asked them why they never told him and their other friends. They replied by saying that they thought that they handle it by themselves. Before they could finish the rest of their sentence, Toriel cut them off by telling them it was okay. She said that everyone could help them make everything better again. Asgore pointed out that, judging what he was told, Bete was no ordinary girl; she was the result of the spell of an insane wizard.

SSAGR2

Frisk soon apologized for what happened to Asriel, however, Gaster joined the conversation by saying that he believes there is still hope left for Asriel. Asgore asked him how Sans was doing but he refused to answer. Instead, he continued to say, assuming the souls Bete had weren't destroyed or fully drained, Asriel and other monsters killed by her might have a chance of returning. Unfortunately, he said that the bodies of humans can't be regenerated like how Sans' body was regenerated, therefore, they needed to act as soon as they could. He continued to explain that it was Toriel and Asgore's responsibility to save Asriel from Bete's control, but he had no idea where Bete will appear or where she is. Asgore informed him that he talked to a human that is in charge of the city's defenses and that said that he was going to set a perimeter around the arena and the school. Gaster went on to say that would make things easier because Bete is most likely to appear at either the school or the arena. Asgore said that they could split and that she will probably appear at the arena because she's already attacked the school. He said that Frisk, Toriel, and himself could take care of the arena while Gaster and Undyne go to the school. However, Gaster said he wasn't going and claimed that he didn't want to leave Papyrus alone to take care of the wounded because he wasn't fit for fighting. He also said that Undyne should be more than enough. Asgore then said that Undyne could also hopefully do something about Alphys but before Undyne could tell him that she's dead, a loud noise was heard and it was decided that they needed to go now.

While in the arena with Toriel and Frisk, Bete ambushed them. She attacked Frisk. Although they blocked the attack, it still pushed them backward. Asgore then tried to stab her with his trident, but she effortlessly dodged it. She then introduced them to HATE Asriel, who was very angry at Asgore and Toriel for how they treated them.

Soon Asgore was seen struggling to fight Asriel. He blocked some of his attacks but creating a fire. However, Asriel apparently went through it and attacked him. Toriel begged Asriel to stop and Asgore did the same. However, Asriel told him to shut up and insulted him for killing six humans.

SSAGR

Asgore, wounded by Asriel's attack.

He stabbed him near his shoulder but, before he could finish the job, Frisk tackled him with his shield. They told Toriel and Asgore that they needed to leave and think of something else. Toriel told them that she didn't want to leave Asriel but Frisk snapped at them and said that what she was doing was useless. They decided to leave.

Later Toriel was seen trying to heal Asgore.

Game Over[]

Part 1[]

When Toriel came through the door to greet Chara, Asgore came too. When they started talking about strange memories, Asgore said that the most important thing was that they were both okay. Asgore then insists on going with Chara to keep them safe.

Asgore then appears in the background for a few seconds when Toriel asks Papyrus if he'll be fine.

Part 2[]

Asgoro firing trident

Asgore firing his trident at the last scene.

In Part 2, he is seen at the beginning calling Mettaton to tell him about Alphys's fate. He is also seen talking to Chara and easing his worry about Asriel.

After the Mettaton vs Bete fight, Asgore is seen telling Muffet with a broken Mettaton in hand to find somewhere safe and that they had done enough already. He's also briefly seen at the end of the episode firing his trident.

Ḣ̸͈a̷̞̽ẗ̵̥́e̸̟͒[]

Asgore and Torial

Asgore and Toriel after Chara leads Asriel away from the Arena.

Asgore's appearance makes a big debut and makes an attempt to kill Bete. After Chara leading Asriel away from the Arena, Asgore and Toriel are left to tackle with Bete. Soon after Chara successfully leads Asriel out of the Arena, Asgore fires his Trident at Bete, which ultimately traps her and is found wedge with the wall.

Toriel is then seen healing Asgore, Bete says that how much would've been alive if they had died. Asgore then mentions that he has come to the terms that Bete's words can't hurt him badly as he is about to hurt her.

Asgore summoning his Tridents.

The actual battle then starts when Asgore summons a lot of Tridents from the ground, after he hits his Trident in the ground, directing towards Bete in the horizontal pattern to which she ultimately dodges, however, get hits by the fire from Toriel. After getting the direct hit from Toriel's attack and just the moment she stepped on the ground, Asgore and Toriel, both use a combined attack at Bete, which she, in the end, deflects it and send the attack back towards them, which made black smoke arise around them. During this, Asgore is shocked when Bete manipulates and redirects the fire, in which it likely reminded him of a certain person.[2]

Stand together

Toriel and Asgore surrounded by black smoke.

Bete then states that she is sensing great sadness from their souls, but one of them is drowning on guilt and regret and is trying to run away from it. Bete then tricks Toriel that Asgore is killing the children that were killed in the Underground. Asgore shouts Toriel's name, however, she was unable to hear his voice. Bete then attacks Asgore in the chest, sending him way back, however, when Bete was about to deal with another blow, Asgore used his Trident and fires fire at Bete, which after getting a direct hit from the flame, her fast regeneration healed her. Asgore is then seen hitting his Trident on the ground and surrounds himself with a huge flame revolving in a circle.

He then gets out of the flame and both eyes flashes in two different colors, coming near Bete and giving her huge stunning blows in an instant, leaving her on the ground of the Arena. Toriel, who just saw the past of the fallen children accompanied by Asgore killing them when Toriel was trying to stop him, making a powerful attack and shooting it at Asgore, leaving a fatal wound on Asgore's belly.

Asgore fatally wounded.

A flashback is then seen where Asgore and Toriel when they were young, in the flashback, Toriel is healing Asgore from his injuries. However, after the flashback, Asgore is then seen unconscious on the ground with a fatal wound on his chest.

Animosity[]

When Chara appears in a sort of void, we notice Flowey holding a picture that has Asgore, Toriel and Chara in it. Later we see Asgore again during a flashback Chara has where she describes what Asriel had done for Chara, and how he helped him learn what hope can do.

Finally, in Toriel's induced hallucination, where Toriel desperately tries to run away from what she'd done, we see "Asgore" appear as she turns a corner and asks her why she attacked him, only causing her to run more. After, Toriel nearly gets beheaded by Bete, but luckily saved by Gaster. Soon after attacking Bete and having her run away he spots Asgore unconscious on the floor and struggling for his life. This naturally makes him feel quite pitiful towards him, so he asks Toriel to take care of him and act as if she cares for monsters for once.

Hope[]

Toriel reflects on Bête Noire's misconception about her emotions, realizing that her disdain was directed inward, not towards Asgore. She shares her prolonged sense of hopelessness but acknowledges a newfound understanding of Asgore's motives, having fought alongside him. Asgore reciprocates Toriel's apology, emphasizing the enduring bond they share, which can't be severed despite the scars of their past. He offers to be a comforting friend as they navigate the healing process together.

Personality[]

Throughout Undertale, it was hinted by many of the characters that Asgore was intimidating and ruthless. The fact that he murdered six human children seemed to support this claim. However, it was said by Papyrus that this was false, stating that the king was a "pushover", yet kind. This is revealed to be somewhat true, as Asgore was shown to be very kind and did not really want to harm anyone, but he did not want to go back on the promise he made to his people.

Nevertheless, Asgore seems to have a very gentle personality as seen many times. He shows regret for what he has done to the humans that fell into the Underground, yet he is a good leader and would do what he has to do for his people even if he doesn't want to, unlike his former wife (and ex-queen of the underground), Toriel.

Powers and Abilities[]

Abilities[]

  • Expert Combatant: Asgore has been alive for many years, has done years of training and had participated in the War of Humans and Monsters. In Ḣ̸͈a̷̞̽ẗ̵̥́e̸̟͒ against Bête, he slashed her multiple times with his trident quickly before she could react to defend herself, sending her back and likely weakening her slightly.
  • Expert Tactician: From his years of fighting experience, he is skilled and calculated with his attacks.
  • Trident Proficiency: Asgore’s main weapon is his iconic trident, which he is extremely skilled wielding such.

Powers[]

  • Boss / Monster Physiology: Asgore has the characteristics of most monsters, being made of magic and such, specifically with goat-like physiques. Since he is more specifically a boss monster, he is physically more superior to other monsters, but not to (certain) humans.
  • Pyrokinesis: Asgore has the same abilities as his family, that being the ability to summon fire at will, and use it to attack his enemies. He also is unique in his use of fire magic, as he also uses it to enhance his other attacks. Due to his years of training and fighting, he is shown to utilize this in many ways, like in Ḣ̸͈a̷̞̽ẗ̵̥́e̸̟͒ when he was fighting against Bête, Asgore summons a large, circling aura of fire.
  • Colored Attacks: From his trident, Asgore can use blue and orange colored attacks that have a specific way to avoid damage: if the color is blue, you have to stay still to avoid damage, if orange, the opposite.
  • Trident Attacks: Shown in Ḣ̸͈a̷̞̽ẗ̵̥́e̸̟͒, Asgore can summon multiple tridents out of the ground after stabbing his original one into the said ground.
