"Why are you even trying to stop me anymore? Your efforts will be in vain. You fail to realize, that for me... This is just the beginning. But for you... It's Game Over."
―Bête Noire to Chara[src]

Bête Noire was a construct of a spell and a physical incarnation of the SOUL Trait Fear, created by Agate Lightvale solely to ensure humans and monsters would never live in peace. A thousand years after her creation, monsters were freed from the Underground and lived in harmony with humans, so Bête, under the alias Betty, met Frisk and posed as an ally. During her temporary acquaintance with Jessica Grey, they both were responsible for framing Papyrus and the murder of Sans. After Bête's true nature was revealed, her actions started expanding into a war, where she ruthlessly slaughtered humans and monsters alike to obtain their SOULs. Bête began losing track of her mind when she was enhanced with HATE, but nonetheless, Bête continued her murderous attacks on Determino, fighting her enemies physically and emotionally. However, in her final fight against W. D. Gaster and his two children, Gaster, out of pure rage for Sans's second death, brutally tore Bête apart and struck her with endless blows, finally destroying Bête once and for all, but it resulted in the release of HATE, who was defeated by Chara and Asriel.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Bête Noire was created in the aftermath of a conflict between Agate, Copper, and Amber Lightvale. Before she existed, her soul resided in Agate Lightvale.

When Agate and Copper began to argue over the barrier, their tempers flared, and they fought, while Amber watched. At the end of the battle, Agate lost, humiliated; thus, she lost her trait and fled.

While Agate was gone, she sought a trait that could defeat Determination.

When Agate returned to the kingdom, Copper and Amber gave her a warm welcome due to her long disappearance. However, what they didn't know was that she had inverted her soul, so after some time, she fought her brother against his own will. Amber tried to escape during the fight, but her sister blocked her from escaping by using one of her magical blasts and murdered her. This caused Copper to lose his trait and sit there, frozen in fear while his sister was killed in front of him. She then stabbed her brother, killing him. Agate then realized that her soul was damaged, and she was slowly dying after she inverted her trait. This damage was because her soul couldn't adapt to the sudden change of it being inverted. Knowing that her time was running short, she used her soul and Amber's body for a spell that would create a powerful creature that would never let humans and monsters live in peace, the Bête Noire.[2][5]

Frisk summoning his shield

As Frisk was making his way to the Anti-Monsters Department (or AMD) HQ, he spotted Bete carelessly crossing the road. It seemed like she was about to get hit by a car if it weren't for Frisk, who summoned his shield to protect her.

At first, the two seemed to get along, and Frisk continued his AMD HQ journey. Here, Frisk hoped to convince the AMD leader, Jessica Grey, to sign a peace treaty between monsters and humans.

After Frisk successfully managed to convince Jessica to give him a chance to show her that monsters are kind creatures, they took her and Bete to Gaster's lab. Here, she met Gaster, and he explained to Jessica how the core's expansion would help both humans and monsters. Bete was presumably listening because, according to a Tumblr post, Bete was looking for something in Gaster's core.

IMG 5607

Bete and Akumu

Next, Frisk took Jessica and Bete to Toriel's school, where they asked Toriel to make one of her students demonstrate how to use their magic. During the demonstration, however, a pink blob-like creature popped out of Bete. Bete told everyone that the creature was Akumu (or Kumu for short), her "overprotective" friend.

IMG 5603

Frisk introducing Bete to Sans and Asriel

Frisk later took Bete to Grillby's, where she met Sans and Asriel. Here, they questioned Bete about her soul and her magic. This forced her to tell them that her soul was no ordinary soul; it was pink. Upon learning about her unique soul trait, Gaster started researching about "Bete's Soul".

IMG 9099

Eventually, the conference horribly erupted into chaos from the revelation that Asgore had murdered Alina, Jessica's daughter, twenty years ago, along with 5 other innocent children. After Jessica stormed out of the HSO, a shadow-like creature (presumably Bete herself) gave Jessica an offer; if she did exactly what she told her to do, she would help her deliver out her revenge on monsterkind.[1]

After the episode's introduction, Bete appeared when Frisk visited Gaster. They asked him if he found anything about her soul; sadly, at the time, he had found nothing. Before they left to see Mettaton's first live performance, Bete decided to come with them along with Papyrus, Sans, and Asriel.

IMG 5854

When they arrived, Bete decided to go talk to Mettaton, while Papyrus spotted a girl stuck on a crane that was holding slabs of steel. However, what he didn't know was Bete was just making him hallucinate the girl. It was just an illusion she created and she was using her powers to conceal the fact that wasn't a real girl from Papyrus' view.

After he succeeded at moving the crane above the building's ceiling, the illusion that looked similar to Agate commanded him to push a button, resulting in him unintentionally dropping the steel. Luckily, Sans used his powers to stop the metal in its place. Using this opportunity, Jessica Grey shot him with the Anti-Magic Ray.

Later, Sans and Asriel teleported to the AMD's recording room, where they investigated the camera's recordings; Asriel believed that the AMD had been involved with what happened. The two of them then saw the recording where Frisk saved Bete from the car in the previous episode.

Surprisingly though, instead of a car appearing,

nothing was there, indicating that she was using her powers to make Frisk see a car. The two also saw a recording of her leaving Gaster's lab during the conference. With this, Sans and Asriel learned that she was secretly orchestrating the events that occurred from the attempts to make peace with humans and monsters.

Before the two could leave, Bete entered the room. She wasted no time revealing her true nature. She told them that she really wanted to keep it a secret longer and spoil it herself, but that didn't really matter to her as she has all the information she needed anyway. Then she talks about Asriel's soul and talks about how special it is. She makes Asriel hallucinate into seeing Chara, causing him to freeze in his tracks. Little did he know that she would stab him with her powerful spear and steal his soul.

She threw her spear, but Sans, having failed to stop the attack with telekinesis due to being hit by the Anti-Magic Ray for the second time, teleported in front of him, sacrificing himself. Bete then took his soul and fed it to Akumu, turning him into dust. Asriel attacked her in grief, only for Akumu to shield her from the projectile attack. He prepared another attack, before retreating after remembering Sans telling him to warn the others.

Bete proceeded to order Jessica Grey to give her the HATE vial. When she refused, Akumu brutally grabbed her by her neck and slammed her against the wall. Bete then conjured an illusion, masquerading as Alina. She then jarred up the hallucination by giving her demonic eyes, cuts, scrapes, and torn up clothes. The episode then cut to black, with Jessica's screams audible in the background.[4]

This conversation took place after the Dust episode, from what the dialogues indicate.[6]

Do or Die[]

IMG 5855

Bete sitting next to Akumu

Around the beginning of the episode, Bete was shown waiting in her hideout with Akumu. Soon, Akumu grabbed her attention and showed her Sans' soul, which was having its magic drained. She realized that the magic Akumu absorbed from Sans's was enough to start her plan and the screen then cuts to black.

Later, it was revealed that Bete needed to drain a monster's/human's magic so they could create an army of Kumulings that she would use to search and steal the souls of humans.

Then, she is briefly seen commanding a Kumuling to kill Alphys. Next, another Pink Creature appeared in front of Frisk, and then when Frisk tried to kill it, It became a hallucination of Sans. The Kumulings were beginning their "soul harvest". Gaster, who was accompanied by Alphys and Jessica Grey, cornered Bete in the nullifier room, forcing her to fight Gaster. He hoped to kill her himself, and, if he failed, Alphys would activate the nullifier room, which she hoped would kill her once and for all.

IMG 5865

As the "soul harvest" continued, Gaster and Bete continued fighting. During their fight, the Pink monsters managed to gather some souls from human children. Gaster didn't know at the time, but Bete's special attack, Rhabdophobia, was almost charged up. During the fight, Gaster delivered serious damage to her. But before he could finish her, a pink creature attempted to kill a girl named Lily. Her brother Cam rescued her, sacrificing himself. But as a result, the Pink creature took his soul, and Bete managed to charge up Rhabdophobia fully.

Luckily for him, Jessica and Alphys came in just in time. Jessica shot Bete, temporarily incapacitating her, after which Alphys gave Jessica a cyan artifact, allowing her to teleport back home with Gaster. Kumu attempted to attack her, only for Alphys to put up a shield around her. She planned to use the nullifier to kill Bete once and for all. She managed to activate it, and it attacked her.

Alphys' shield soon disappeared, resulting in Bete impaling her with her spear. Unfortunately, the nullifier didn't affect her; it only works on monsters and humans, but she was neither as she was a spell. Undyne entered the room. She summoned her spear and launched it at Bete; however, Bete tricked Undyne into hitting Alphys's soul instead, resulting in Undyne accidentally killing her. She then took control of her spear and attempted to kill Undyne as well. However, due to her immense Determination, Undyne transformed into Undyne the Undying. The episode then ended on a cliffhanger.[3]

Love Part 1[]

This episode begins with Bete confronting Undyne the Undying. Thanks to her determination, Undyne easily overwhelmed her. Eventually, Bete's patience ran thin. She charged up Rhabdophobia and used it on Undyne's spears.

Unfortunately for her, Undyne just created more spears, annihilating Bete's spears, and ripping through the shield Akumu made. While Bete was down from the barrage, Undyne finishes her off with a massive red spear, blowing a hole through the roof. The resulting blast disintegrated Bete's back and lower body; however, Akumu is unharmed as Bete took the brunt of the explosion.

Akumu, still alive, consumed the HATE vial, transferring its effects to Bete. Revived and intact, but visibly under the effects of HATE, Bete attacked Undyne again. Later in the fight, she began to cough up the HATE substance. This forced Bete and Akumu to retreat through the broken roof.

HATE Betty 2

Later, Bete and Akumu were seen hiding in a rundown shed. Bete snaps at Akumu for eating the entire vial of HATE but then apologizes. Bete explains how she's afraid of being fully possessed by HATE because it has its own plans.

Akumu comforted her as the Kumulings she created to gather human souls from the school arrived. She explained to Akumu that she had done what she needed to do; make Frisk look for them. Akumu then consumes a large number of souls collected by the Pink Creatures, making Bete and him even more powerful. Bete, confident in their victory, says no one will be able to stop them.

Bete and Akumu were later mentioned by Frisk how the glitch created them.

Love Part 2[]

Bete soon encounters Frisk, and the two begin to fight. Thanks to Bete's ability to use HATE, she gained a massive advantage. During the fight, she managed to use Frisk's memories from his genocide route to deplete their Determination until it was almost gone. Later in the fight, Frisk was about to be killed if it wasn't for Asriel. Using Bete's illusions, Akumu managed to kill Asriel and take his soul.

IMG 5812

Frisk then managed to increase his LV to 19 and continued to fight Bete. She was nearly completely overwhelmed by his incredible power, which was slightly enhanced by HATE, so she "called for help." She pulled out Sans' soul from Akumu and filled it with HATE. HATE's regeneration ability brought back Sans' body. Sans then could only obey Bete's commands.

IMG 5814

Bete resurrecting Sans

Frisk didn't stand a chance against Sans and was about to die if it wasn't for Papyrus, who blocked Bete's attack with his Gaster Blaster. Bete began to notice Toriel, Asgore, Gaster, and everyone else approaching. In an attempt to stop them from interfering, she created a giant HATE shield (similar to Chara in Continue) which shielded herself, Akumu, Frisk, Papyrus, and Sans inside. Papyrus manages to take the HATE out of Sans using love. The HATE shield shattered and others begin to arrive; thus, Bete was forced to retreat with Kumu.[7]

My Promise[]

Bete merging with Akumu, taking their true form

When the episode began, Bete was furious about the fact that people were supposed to fear her while she has repeatedly been forced to retreat instead. She then made Akumu show her the souls collected from the soul harvest. Unfortunately for her, all of the souls were infected by HATE, except for Cam's soul. While draining it, she told Akumu to destroy all the souls, refusing to use HATE to win. However, Bete decides to keep and use HATE on Asriel's soul.

After fusing with Kumu and revealing her true form, Bete tells Asriel that they'll go hunt down the people that hurt him so much.

Later, when Frisk, Asgore, and Toriel came to the arena, Bete decided to "go say hi". Frisk, noticing Bete about to attack them, used a shield to try and block her attack, only to be sent flying backward from the impact. Asgore tried to impale her with his trident, but she effortlessly dodged it. She said that she was going to fight Frisk, but Asgore and Toriel would get to fight somebody, who turned out to be their son, Asriel Dreemurr.

Bete swooped in behind Frisk, who tried to attack her. However, she blocked the attack. She claimed that she's no longer scared of him because she knows all his tricks.

After Asriel stabbed Asgore, and Frisk tackled him, Frisk told Asgore and Toriel that they'd have to retreat. Bete, however, didn't want them to escape and made Asriel attack Frisk.

Bete makes a small cameo near the ending of the episode. She is seen near the city arena alongside Asriel, resting against a wall. She tells Asriel that "it's time" and an army of Kumulings surround the area and tells them that they'll see who will be running away this time.

Game Over Part 2[]

Bete first appears when the humans seal a barrier to protect civilians. She attacks a man with a dark energy shaped arrow and gets shot at by a woman. She suddenly appears directly in front of her, cutting her head off. Bete stands over their body with a soul, draining its magic. She notices Seth on the ground in fear and asks if they're scared. She then tells them of how 'it only hurts a little.' As she's about to kill him, Mettaton shines his spotlight on her. She is shown to be disintegrating and struggling to break free.

That hurt a little too

"Alright, that hurt a little."

After some time, she destroys the spotlight and launches at Mettaton. Once she has him, she throws him through the arena's ceiling and jumps down, ready to attack. As she's about to kill Mettaton, Isabelle throws him his 'NEO' briefcase, and he catches it and escapes Bete's attack. She seems to be annoyed that he's trying to stop her. She attempts to attack Mettaton, but he grabs her arm and launches his cannon at her face. Giant parts of her skin peeled off, revealing she looks more like Akumu, having multiple sharp teeth and pink skin. She then comments, 'Alright. That hurt a little.'

"You don't fight very often, do you?"

Bete continues to dodge Mettaton's attacks, agreeing to 'play' with him. He tried to sneak-attack her with his cannon but she dodges. As she launched up to him, he attempted to kick her, but she grabbed his leg. However, Mettaton pushed her away, forcing her into the ground. Bete then notices rubble on the ground and attempts to throw it at Mettaton. As he gets distracted by the rocks, she launches a spear at him, wounding his shoulder. She then launches up at him, ready to attack, asking, 'You don't fight very often, do you?' She throws him to the ground, severely damaging him.

Gilby

Bete getting annoyed over Grillby.

As she prepares to deal the finishing blow, Muffet ties her up with her webs. Grillby then interferes, attacking Bete with fire. Bete has a shield up to dodge Grillby's fire, but she gets annoyed, saying, 'I'm done playing with you.' She throws Grillby into the wall and punches Muffet to the ground. As she prepares to kill Muffet, Mettaton returns the favor, shining the spotlight on Bete once more. She simply walks through it, showing no struggle, and launches an energy arrow at him. She comments on how he ran out of energy and smiles at his broken body. She then is surprised to feel him grab his leg. He refuses to let go.

Then, she pitifully asks why he tries so hard on a battle which he can't win, he says of how he just needed to take some time. Chara then enters the area, ready to attack. Bete tries to run but is stopped by Mettaton. She is launched into the wall and attempts to get up. When she does, Chara orders her to stay down, shooting at Bete. Bete is about to be shot, but Asriel comes to her defense. She then maliciously warns Chara that she isn't the only issue he should be worried about.

Game over

Bete in Game Over.

Bete begins to explain her motives; she explains how she's only trying to stop history from repeating itself, 'sacrificing a couple hundred to save thousands.' She then elaborates on how much magic and power she has, enough to wipe out the entire city. She plans to get rid of all the monsters and then take over the humans. She then questions why they're even trying to stop her anymore, saying how their efforts will be in vain. She then says of how it's just the beginning for her, but for Chara, it's Game Over.

Ḣ̸͈a̷̞̽ẗ̵̥́e̸̟͒[]

We first see Bete in this episode fighting Chara. Chara uses their Special Hell attack on Bête while Toriel surrounds Asriel in a flame wall. Chara confronts Asriel, and Bete tries to intervene, but she is interrupted by Asgore and Toriel. Asgore and Toriel corner Bête as she gets impaled by Blasts.

SSA1

Bete standing over Chara's "special hell" attack

Later, we see Toriel healing up a wound of Asgore; Bête tells Asgore to think of the people who would be alive if he had just died. After this ordeal, Asgore claims that Bête's comments can't hurt him as much as he is about to hurt her. Bête then starts to use the memories of the two against them; Bête summons a bow (which is supposed to resemble Roy's ) which upsets Asgore.

SSA3

Bete preparing to kill Asgore

They attack Bête, but she fights back even harder where Toriel attacks Bête with fire magic, but Bête blocks it easily, segregate it, and then reflects towards them with more strength. (At that moment, Agate makes another non-physical cameo behind Bête.)

SSA4

Agate's small cameo when Bete absorbs the fire magic

The attack causes the place to drown in smoke and dust; Bête uses her hallucination ability on Toriel, which causes her to see all the previous six children that she had failed to save. Asgore notices this and tries to make Toriel snap out of it, but is hopeless, Bête taunting them both, takes this opportunity to punch Asgore in the chest. Asgore then defends himself and shoots a flame at Bête which causes her "skin" to disintegrate slightly, though she quickly heals the damage done to her.

After this, Asgore does a lot of damage to Bête which puts her in "trouble", but it just happened to have been one of her tricks and strategies, causing Toriel to shoot a powerful flame attack at Asgore.

SSA5

"Did you really hate him that much?"

This left a huge scar on Asgore's chest and leaving him unconscious and potentially dead.

The episode then tragically ends with Bête saying she didn't expect such a hard hit, and further asks Toriel quite menacingly if she hated Asgore that much.

Bête is first seen casting a hallucination of Asgore on Toriel. She attempts to kill Toriel but is interrupted by Gaster, who cuts her arm off. Bête shields herself from any more of Gaster's attacks, one of them causes holes to appear in the Arena's wall and she escapes through one of them.

Outside, she questions why Gaster is in the Arena in the first place. Sans suddenly shows up behind her and shoots a Gaster Blaster at her. Annoyed, Bête mocks Sans and Papyrus, saying that they are merely a 'jester and his lackey'. She tells them that she isn't scared of them but gets punched by one of Gaster's hands and is sent flying, only to hit a wall. Bete says that they have trapped her in a chain, but a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. She targets Papyrus and tries to hurt him but Papyrus attacks her before she does, a bone slams her into a building. One of Gaster's hands punches her again and she flies through an office building then Sans uses a Gaster Blaster to blast her into the ground. Bête lands on a wall and pushes herself to jump at Gaster, she is stopped midair using telekinesis and is slammed into a wall.

However, Papyrus rushes towards her and dodges all the falling debris and stops her using blue bones before she could successfully escape. Bête punches Papyrus; the attack sends him flying and making an impact on a nearby building's wall. Gaster and Sans target her with Gaster Blasters, she shields herself from the blasts, the HATE tries to take over Bête, but she refuses and she screams, causing Sans and Gaster to seize fire. Exhausted, Bête desperately tries to make the trio stop attacking her, she grabs Papyrus with an enlarged hand and tells them to stop. She squeezes Papyrus, Sans quickly teleports behind her and attacks her with a Gaster Blaster.

Bete uses Rhabdophobia on Sans' attack

Angered, Sans tells Bête that he had enough, he puts himself on top of a Gaster Blaster and flies upwards. He says that they should just end everything right now, he snaps his fingers and spawns multiple Gaster Blasters. Bête is seemingly scared by this, so her hair turns fully pink, Gaster suddenly remembers her Rhabdophobia ability and yells at Sans to stop. Unfortunately for them, however, Bête uses her ability and takes all of the Gaster Blasters for herself. She fires all of them at Sans, but Gaster uses his hands to protect Sans from the incoming fire. The blast causes Gaster's hands to break and he passes out temporarily. Seeing how Gaster and Papyrus are vulnerable, Bête aims all of the Gaster Blasters at them. Sans teleports in front of them and summons another wave of Gaster Blasters to counter the attack, this massive attack causes Sans to melt, but Sans' Gaster Blasters overpower Bête's.

Because Sans exerted so much of his magic into the attack, he eventually turns into Dust and dies. Bete tries to attack Gaster and Papyrus by sending an arrow projectile at them, but Gaster blocks it. She tries to convince herself that things will be more likely to be in her favor since she is only facing a duo instead of a trio. Gaster tells her to come at him and Bête takes this as him underestimating her power, she attacks Gaster from behind, but he blocks it again and blasts her away. Bête tries to attack him again and extends her fingers into the ground and all of them pop out like tentacles. Gaster counters this immediately and slices all of the tentacles in half, causing Bête to lose her fingers. Gaster traps Bête in a string and throws her against the ground. Gaster sends magical bullets after her, but she dodges and blocks all of them.

Gaster eventually uses Polychromatism against Bête. He uses both of his giant hands to rip Bête into two, stabs her with multiple purple spikes and crushes her into the ground with a giant hand, and blasts her with a giant Gaster Blaster. Surprisingly, Bête still seems to be alive after all the attacks, as a result, Gaster sends multiple blasts after her, disintegrating her into a hollow husk.

Hope[]

Bête makes no physical appearance in Hope, she rather appears as a memory/flashback. As Toriel remembered what Bete said about saying that she, Toriel, hated Asgore for what he has done in the past. However, Toriel denies this, but this leads her to reflect on her own mistakes.

She appears again when HATE impales Asriel with its sword, with Asriel remembering the time when Akumu stabbed him with its harpoon, with Bête having an evil smile.

Personality[]

"We gotta make mom proud... She told me you are and will be my only friend. That we can't trust humans... that monsters are dangerous... That a civilization where the two races live together, is just a time bomb waiting to go off. That we're doing good by speeding up the process."
―Bête Noire to Akumu[src]
That was awesone! Betty.

Bete saying "That was awesome!" after Frisk "saved" her from a car.

Bête, under her human alias, is a curious child bursting with energy. She acts cheerfully and is quick to greet peers with a huge smile. Nevertheless, despite appearing sweet and innocent, Bête's false personality quickly dissipated after Asriel and Sans discovered some AMD camera footage of her acting rather suspicious. During this time, Dr. Gaster learned that Agate Lightvale sacrificed her own soul to create a powerful creature that would make sure monster-kind and humanity never live in peace. Afterward, Bête revealed her true personality, quickly indicating that she enjoys it when she severely hurts others (both physically and emotionally), showing that she has a very sadistic, psychotic, and violent personality.

She appears to enjoy hurting her opponents before she kills them. In fact, Bête is known for attempting to kill anyone in her way. It's also clear that she has no problem lying to, or betraying, others, as she manipulated Jessica into doing what she wanted them to do. Another example of this is when she caused Undyne to hallucinate, causing her to kill Alphys instead of her, or when she caused Jessica to hallucinate a mangled and nightmarish version of Alina, causing her immense emotional pain whilst taking the HATE vial. During combat, she often becomes arrogant, resulting in her underestimating her enemies. She also displays minimal tactical knowledge, allowing the use of strategy to defeat her in battle, as shown in her various battles with Gaster. Although it is observed that she can calculate and knows how to get what she wants, though she seems to not be able to plan to a great extent.

Scared Of Me (28)

"All humans and monsters are doomed to make the same mistakes." This line helps prove that Betty views what she's doing as honorable.

Bête, for the most part, believes what she is doing is right. According to her conversation with Akumu, and a couple of lines from Scared Of Me, she believes that monsters and humans living together is "like a time bomb waiting to go off". Therefore, she thinks that what she's doing is "just speeding up the process", thus showing that Bête's views on humans and monsters living together are the same as Agate's. She also knows everyone's past, and uses their mistakes to justify what she does, exemplified by her chastising Asriel (as Flowey) for committing genocide on the inhabitants of the Underground.

In her conversation with Akumu, it was also revealed that she is unsure of what she was doing was right or not.

IMG 5669

Bête petting Akumu.

Occasionally, Bête shows care for Akumu and talks to it as an acquaintance. For example, in Do or Die, she seemed concerned when Akumu was hurt in their battle with Gaster. Both Kumu and Bête treasure each other like their best and only friend, but regardless of this false hope, Cami said it was a kind of instinct since they need each other to live. If one of them dies, the other slowly dies due to the lack of magic and inability to collect souls alone.

IMG 5490

HATE Bête's insane smile.

While under HATE's control, Bête acts far more violent and frightening than she had previously. In this state, mostly during combat, she mercilessly attacks her foes with a menacing grin. Also, Bête seems to be scared of HATE's plans, as it could control her; this means she knows that HATE has different plans than her own.

Without a doubt, Bête Noire's biggest (and even fatal) flaw is her arrogance, and this mostly likely stems from Agate's own arrogance after she killed her brother. Throughout Season 2, she consistently underestimated her opponents, without fail. She believes her power is above everyone's and relies on brute force to get through most situations. Another part of this is her desire to be feared, which causes her to draw out killing her opponents even though it is detrimental to her, such as when Gaster stopped her from killing Toriel and Asgore in Animosity, because she wanted to torment Toriel. Due to these factors, she tends not to fight at full strength, and gets easily surprised at power stronger than she was expecting, and a little bit of planning can outsmart her; this puts her in situations where she must use her master manipulation and trickery skills to get out of deadly situations, where she could have easily won if she took her enemies seriously. The best examples of this are her fight with Gaster in Do or Die, her fight with Toriel and Asgore in Ḣ̸͈a̷̞̽ẗ̵̥́e̸̟͒ . She even could have killed Frisk in Love before Asriel had intervened if she had taken the fight as seriously as Frisk was, as Frisk was in no condition to win that fight before Asriel's intervention, even though she managed to kill Asriel. This arrogance isn't the same as idiocy, as she will back out when it is obvious she can't win, like when HATE took over in Love Part 1, or when everyone came to Frisk's rescue in Love Part 2. She actually shows some character growth in Animosity, when she attempts to retreat from the Skeleton Trio. However, her arrogance quickly returns once she kills Sans and gets cocky again. This led to her fatal mistake when she mistook Gaster's threat as underestimation, when in reality Gaster didn't care if she was stronger or not, and she was actually underestimating him; instead of running away, she attacked, and was killed.

Powers and Abilities[]

Powers[]

"She sacrificed her own SOUL to create the most powerful and destructive being imaginable."
W. D. Gaster[src]
  • Bête Noire Physiology: Constructed out of magic from the Bête Noire Spell and comprised of physical matter, Bête Noire's entire body did not consist of any organs or tissue to function. Her biology granted Bête a large number of capabilities superior to that of a human and monster, as well as near-immortality and being able to spawn extensions of her own self.
    • Superhuman Strength: Bête naturally possessed a great amount of strength that surpassed feats of human potential and can continue to get stronger if she consumes more magic.
    • Superhuman Durability: Bête naturally is durable, and she was durable enough to be launched through a tall building by Gaster and Papyrus.
      • Pain Resistance: Bête Noire was stabbed by Asgore's trident and had some of her face blown off by Mettaton's laser in his NEO form and didn't seem to show any pain (considering she claims it "hurt a little"). However, this is shown to be limited pain resistance due to her screaming when Gaster brutally killed her.
    • Superhuman Speed: Bête can run at speeds that make it look like she was teleporting, more so running in bursts of speed that resemble teleportation.
    • Superhuman Agility: Bête had great balance and agility allowing her to avoid attacks from her opponents and even do a flip when she tried attacking Gaster before Sans used his telekinesis on her.
    • Superhuman Stamina: Bête possessed great stamina not even being tired when she ran due to how fast she ran it appeared as if she was teleporting indicating she has a decent number of stamina.
    • Regenerative Healing Factor: Bête could regenerate damage caused to her, such as missing pieces of her "shell" and extreme wounds. The speed of the regeneration depended on how impactful the damage was.
  • Adaptability: Bête Noire was able to adapt to new magical weapons, environment, and fighting skills quickly, due to being made a thousand years in the past with her memoires from that time, via Agate.
  • HATE Enhancement: After getting saved by Akumu with a HATE vial after an attack from Undyne, this restored Bête’s life and made her more stronger and violent than normal, and can even use this HATE on another’s soul.
    • Power Augmentation: Anyone under HATE’s control had their own magic enhanced, including Bête.
This section needs a rewrite

  • Soul-Bound Weapon Creation: Bête could summon various weapons from her own soul, such as the following:
    • Bête Noire Harpoon: Bête could use magic energy from her soul to create a pink spear-like object to pierce her enemies, when harvesting souls, the spear has a pink string attached to retrieve the spear; shown with Sans and Alphys. However, it can simply be used for attacking, as demonstrated with Gaster. It can also be used to fuse with Akumu to access her true form.
    • Scythe: Bête could summon a large scythe used for reaping souls and for combat. However, when split, she mainly relies on Akumu as her scythe.
  • Soul Fission & Fusion: As said, Bête could create an entity by splitting her soul in half that she can control.
    • Akumu: An entity Bête had created from removing the magic-matter from inside her, in which the said magic-matter takes the form of a floating, hot-pink, spherical blob named "Akumu". This entity in particular accompanies Bête due to the two sharing a magical connection, such as collecting and preserving souls inside it for her or protecting her from any threats (and vice versa as Bête also protects Akumu on some occasions due to the said magical connection). Akumu could also shapeshift and can turn into anything, usually either a weapon or shield for Bete.
    • Kumulings: These creatures act as minions for Bête, as they went around to collect souls for her. While Bête can control them herself, they seem to be mainly controlled by Akumu when she splits herself.
      • Hive Mind: Bête created possibly hundreds of Kumulings throughout the entire Determino City to attack and harvest magic from citizen that contained magic in their soul, they do share a connection with Bête despite being separated from her from an extreme distance.
  • Hallucination Manipulation: Bête was capable of inducing a hallucination upon others. This is shown to be limited to one person at a time and requires eye contact to induce an illusion upon a target. The target who has been placed under said illusion is unable to discern reality, nor break free from the illusion on their own unless done by Bête herself. In these illusions, Bête usually shows tragic events or loved ones from the victim to torture them, or she can just use this to simply trick others and show an organism or object, as shown with Papyrus, Undyne, Gaster, and Frisk. She can use this at an advantage for extra help on the battlefield, similarly as if she was mind controlling someone, shown with Toriel in Ḣ̸͈a̷̞̽ẗ̵̥́e̸̟͒.
  • Mind Reading: Bête was capable of viewing the bad memories of others.
  • Pyrokinesis: As seen in Ḣ̸͈a̷̞̽ẗ̵̥́e̸̟͒, Bête could manipulate fire, thanks to Fear's affinity for it. However, she cannot create her own magical fire.
  • Magic Absorption: Shown in My Promise and Game Over: Part 1, Bête could grab souls and drain the magic out of them to enhance hers.
  • Magical Energy Indication: The presence of pink magic, manifested as pink highlights in Bête's hair, signifies her inherent power and magical abilities. When her magical reserves are nearly depleted, her pink hair reverts to its natural color. Conversely, when she is fully charged with magic, her hair becomes a vibrant pink and emits a bright glow. Additionally, her hair can reflect her emotions, such as fear in Animosity, Love: Part 1, and Do or Die.
  • Magical Energy Generation: Bête was shown being able to generate energy to enhance her physical attacks (as shown in Love Part 2 and Do or Die). She can also simply use this to propel herself.

  • Rhabdophobia: Bête's special attack allowed her to generate a negative shockwave of magic, and any magical attack construct caught in the shockwave will be put under Bête's control. Its color changes to pink or tinted pink. Casting this spell does not have a cool-down, but takes large amounts of magic on Bête’s part. The magical energy to cast Rhabdophobia is enough to fill 26 souls, due to in Do or Die, 26 kids had to die in order for Bête to have enough to cast Rhabdophobia, and which doesn’t stop the original user from re-summoning their attack again.[8]

  • HATE Manipulation: Bête could manipulate HATE in her body and use it in different ways, whether to enhance her physical attacks (shown in Love Part 1), generate as a projectile, extend HATE tentacles from her body, or use it defensively as a shield/dome (all three shown in Love Part 2). It also increases the healing factor of her regeneration; however, the HATE corrupts her more if she does this too much.
  • Mind Manipulation: Shown with Sans and Asriel, Bête could use HATE to manipulate others, but she can only do this if she takes their soul.

  • Shapeshifting: After fusing with Akumu, Bête could manipulate her body, specifically usually her limbs, to shift into different sizes, lengths, and even weapons; For example, she could extend spiked tentacles from her fingertips, use claws, shields, arm-mounted blades, scythes, and extending her arms.
  • Fragokinesis: Some of Bête's projectiles are usually explosive. During the episode Hate, she created an explosive shockwave to counter against Chara, and is frequently shown to fire large triangular projectiles, though each time she used them, the explosive impacts cause by them seemed to change, meaning Bête can control the explosives at will.
  • Dark Magenta Weaponry: As an extension of her aforementioned soul-bound weaponry, Bête was shown being able to create dark magenta weapons from her magic, such as summoning dark magenta shields, shown in Game Over: Part 2. She could also summon a bow & arrow, however she only summoned this to taunt and remind Asgore of Roy Goldburn, shown in Hate. Shown in My Promise, she could generate dark magenta blades over her arms and fire a small spear/arrow in Game Over Part 2 at Mettaton. She was also seen generating triangular projectiles, an aura around her weapon (Animosity) and generating dark magenta energy shockwave bursts to push away certain attacks (Animosity also).

    Trivia[]

    • Camila confirmed in the Youtube comments section of Animosity that Bete is dead, gone for good, and that the Hate monster is a completely different thing.[9]
    • Bete hated her nickname as Betty, and only did it to conceal her identity.[10]
    • The "Bête Noire" doesn't have a gender, however, it depends on how it was created. [11]
    • Bete can never become Amber because her soul is long gone due to Agate. After all, she has Agate's soul and NOT Amber's soul.[12]
      • Bete is NOT Amber Lightvale because they are completely two different people. However, Amber's body was used to create Bete as it can be seen in "Glitchtale Origins" animation.[13]
      • Though, Bête Noire knows who Amber was.[14]
    • Bete's "new look" in My Promise isn't a transformation, but her real appearance. In fact, what the audience has seen until My Promise was her transformation.[15]
    • She can turn her hands into pink claws or their "innocent" appearance as seen in Game Over Part 2.
    • When Bete damaged Gaster's soul in Do or Die, it triggered the first flashbacks he had on his experiences in the void.[16]
    • Before Love Part 2 was released, Camila said that Cam's soul is the most powerful soul Bete has collected.[17]
    • Bete doesn't have a gender.[18].
    • Betty is a nickname for "Bête Noire". [19][20]
      • Bete's real name, Bête Noire, comes from the French term Bête Noire, which means Bête=Beast and Noire=Black (translated from french) "someone or something that one particularly dislikes." As for her creator, Agate Lightvale, monsters were her bête noire. This could also be referring to the fans and most Glitchtale characters, as several people dislike her. Bête Noire in French specifically means "Black Beast".
        BeteNoireTrueForm

Bete's shell coming off from one of the lasers from Mettaton, possibly being her actual form. This also probably is a reference to Agate Lightvale.

      • Camila said in the description of her speedpaint "The Black Beast" that one of the other reasons why Bete is also called "Black Beast" is because Bete feeds on HATE to get stronger.[21]
      • This also explains why her primary goal was to make sure there would never be peace between humans and monsters.
    • Bete's special attack was first announced in an amino post of Camila.[22]
    • Bete fears death.
      • "Do or Die" confirmed it when Bete was about to be killed by one of Gaster's gaster blasters.
      • This is also supported by the deleted scene in Love Part 1, where Bete tries to console herself after seeing Agate's corpse. Her hair grows pink and assures herself that she won't die.
    • In My Sunshine, Bete can be seen looking around the AMD HQ while Frisk was talking with Jessica.
    • Bete seems to grow more powerful by absorbing human and monster souls, causing her hair to turn increasingly pink. It also activates her special attack, Rhabdophobia.
    • Bete's Hallucination Casting ability may be influenced on the Tsukuyomi from Naruto, due to the fact that both abilities require both people to maintain eye contact, and both cause hallucinations/illusions to whoever is caught in them.
    • Camila Cuevas once had Bete's profile photo on YouTube, even before she was seen in the series.
    • It was revealed in Do or Die and the description of a speedpaint video that one Fear soul can exist at any moment, and the same goes for Determination.
    • Gaster told Frisk in the episode Do or Die that only a Fear soul can defeat a user of the determination soul trait and vice versa.
    • Rhabdophobia (in the case of Bete's special attack, since Rhabdophobia has multiple meanings) is the fear of magic. This information was uncovered at the beginning of a speedpaint video.
    • Bete does not eat, sleep, or bleed.[23] This was shown in Love Part 1 when Bete did not shed any blood after being hit by Undyne's spear.
    • If Akumu dies, Bete will slowly die, and the same applies to Akumu. The same is true for both, but they do not die immediately, it should take a while. If this were to happen, the cause of death would be from running out of magic, because they use magic to live.[citation needed]
    • Camila once said on her Tumblr page that Bete's soul is pink because pink is a color that looks innocent and can also trick the characters and the audiences.
    • Bete is 14 physically because of Amber (via having her corpse as her body permanently), 30 mentally because of Agate (via having a tied consciousness and soul with her), and 1,000 chronologically since that is how long she was dormant before she emerged.
    IMG 9232
    • Before Dust came out, Camila released a screenshot, which features Sans and Bete. [24].
    • Bete is afraid of HATE's intentions.[25][26]
    • Killing monsters and humans are none of Bete's intentions, although it's not enough to stop her. It's not necessary to kill them all.[27]
    • The traits of FEAR and Determination counter each other.[28]
    • The Bête Noire Spell is a couple of hundred years old, but Bete's body age is 14, and it will never progress.[citation needed]
    • Camila doesn't want to explain why Bete is interested in Asriel's soul.[29]
    • According to a post, Bete was looking for something in the CORE. And, in another post, it was revealed that she was looking for a "very special" soul in Gaster's lab that might be hidden within the CORE. Looking closely at the True Lab's power generator, a faint red heart could be seen, which might have belonged to a previous Determination soul bearer. After all, Determination can "refuse to die", which might explain why it was taken out of the host without being shattered. But, since it cannot return to whoever its host was, it seems as if this SOUL lacks the Determination to return to the bearer.
    • Much like Chara, if Hard Mode weren't activated, Bete would never have existed in Season 2 and the consequences of her activities would have never occurred.[30]
    • Bete is not strong enough to beat Undyne.[31]
    • If Bete knew that the timeline will be erased if she kills Frisk, she wouldn't care.[32]
    • If you invert Bete's colors, you can find Amber.
    • Bete is trying to be careful with HATE for most of the series and is trying not to use it. Once she uses too much HATE, it will take over again as shown in Animosity. [33]
    • Bete isn't the first Bête Noire spell to exist. There was someone else before her.[34]
    • The reason why Bête didn't absorb Alphys' soul was that doing so wouldn't have made a big difference in her powers regardless.[35]
    • When Bete is consumed by HATE and her hair is fully pink, it doesn't always mean she can use Rhabdophobia, it can also mean she is terrified, especially since Rhabdophobia takes a large amount of magic.[36][37]
    • If Agate used Copper as the vessel for the Bête Noire spell, the spell would've been stronger than Bete.[38]
    • Bete was originally supposed to be able to move between bodies, but Camila removed this idea.[citation needed]
    • Before My Sunshine's release (which was Bete's first appearance), she was announced in an amino post of Camila.[39]
    • A GIF of Bete and Kumu was published on Camila's amino before Do or Die was completed.
    • Bete's special attack, Rhabdophobia, was originally supposed to be named Magicophobia.[40]
    • Bete feeds off magic to exist and if she runs out of magic, she'll die.[41]
    • This is likely an animation error, but at the beginning of My Sunshine, until the car scene, Bete was seen without her purple leggings.
    • Bete's view on monster kind was a mix of her own and Agate's. While she stayed at Gaster's lab she read a lot of history books.[42]
    • Bete let Frisk, Toriel, and Asgore escape because she was so caught up in wanting to be feared. [43]
    • Bete doesn't have any human organs as seen in Animosity when Gaster rips her in half but no organ and such seems to appear.
    • The only way to kill Bete is to make her run out of magic or disintegrate her with a potent attack. [44]
    • In the comic, 'Bête Noire's Awakening'; Bete questioning where her brother was is what was left of Agate's sanity leaving her soul. [45]
    • If Asriel, Sans, and Gaster never found out about Bete's true nature, she would've planned to kill Frisk in a stealthy manner.[46]
    • Agate Lightvale is technically Bête Noire in a way because her soul was the one used to make the spell.[47]
    • Before My Promise, Bete was just an empty shell. But after fusing with Akumu, she now has "physical matter" present inside of her.[48][49]
    • At the end of My Sunshine, the "Bete" at Gaster's house was Akumu disguised as her.[50]
    • Camila was thinking of adding a scene where Bete encounters what is left of Agate Lightvale's corpse, but she decided against it since it would have been confusing at the time. Camila decided to make it a short comic instead.[51]
    • She cannot feel many of the emotions humans and monsters usually can feel, (love, empathy, etc.).[52][53]
    • At the end of Game Over part 1, Bete quotes that "They're doomed to make the same mistakes" which is a reference to "Scared Of Me".
    • In My Promise, Bete said she won't use HATE to win. The last time she used HATE was when she used it on Asriel. Currently, she hasn't used HATE throughout the rest of My Promise and Game Over.
    • In Game Over part 2, we see Bete's new power and alteration when she fuses with Akumu such as her body regenerating without using HATE, her spear is now a dark magenta color, and she can conjure dark energy shaped arrows.
    • Losing the control to HATE is a big threat to Bête Noire because it's basically dying, except that aside from dying she knows she won’t have control of herself anymore.[54]
    • Bete's soul is not extracted from HATE.[citation needed]
    • There is a font named "Betty Noir."
    • There are three ways to kill the Bête Noire.[55]
      1. They need to make her run out of magic.
      2. Blast her dead in 1 shot, as Gaster did with Polychromatism after tearing her in half.
      3. Attack her repeatedly with highly powerful attacks, as shown in Animosity.
