"Do you truly believe our species can coexist?... Even after you saw what they did? No... I won't put our kingdom through that again. I'll follow the rules our king left for us. If you still desire to go against his rules... then..."
―Agate Lightvale to Copper Lightvale[src]

Agate Lightvale was the twin sister of Copper Lightvale and a member of the Wizard Council entitled the Wizard of Bravery. After she and six other Wizards sealed monsters into the Underground in the climax of the War of Humans and Monsters, Agate and her brother proceeded to rule over Determino, but a decade following the conflict, the twins debated over monsterkind, with Agate wishing to preserve the Barrier for their current peacekeeping. Agate engaged in a legitimate duel against Copper to decide the action to take, but her brother betrayed her and came out victorious, causing Agate to lose her SOUL Trait and evade the district in humility. Once she had utilized HATE to invert her Trait into Fear, the Wizard was corrupted and lost her sanity, driving her to murder both her younger sister Amber Lightvale and Copper in glee. Succumbing to the fatal effects of an inversion, Agate casted the Bête Noire Spell to forge her very own Bête Noire, solely to ensure humans and monsters could never coexist.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Growing Up[]

Agate Lightvale was born in the early thirteenth century[2][3] as the slightly younger twin[citation needed] of Copper Lightvale.[4] In the early stages of their childhood, Copper developed Determination, the most powerful of the SOUL Traits, so the royal Lightvale family moved residence to Determino upon discovery. While her brother was trained and lectured on becoming a formidable combatant,[5] Agate gained a SOUL filled with Bravery due to her physical boldness towards physical pain, hardship, death or threats of death.[6]

As children, Copper had a habit of performing risky activities that would have him hurt and Agate had to warn him beforehand. On one instance, Agate attempted to give cautionary advice to Copper to not climb a tree they encountered, and once he started climbing upwards, Agate told him he would fall. Soon enough, Copper fell off the tree and cried from his injury, though none of his injuries received in moments like this were ever too serious. Agate always gave him piggyback rides towards the Lightvale Residence because he kept on crying. By the time they reached their teenage years, their roles had practically switched with Agate being the more rash one.[7] At a young age, Agate met Prince Asgore Dreemurr, who had taught her a few tricks on manipulating fire magic, such as gaining a hold of flames conjured by an opponent and using them to attack said-challenger.[8]

Amber Lightvale's Birth[]

During the age of fifteen,[9] Agate and Copper Lightvale discovered that their mother, Mrs. Lightvale, was pregnant with their younger sister. On the night she was in labor, Agate and her brother peeked through the doorway into their mother's bedroom, watching as she gave birth to Amber Lightvale while Mila Rutrow was present beside her. Unfortunately, Mrs. Lightvale was not strong enough to withstand her new daughter's birth, and despite Mila's attempts to heal her, Mrs. Lightvale's SOUL shattered, much to the horror of Agate.

As many months passed by, Agate and Copper provided care and support for their infant sister, who eventually grew a full head of hair as well as developed two SOUL Traits. One day, Agate entered Amber's room where Copper was present, watching over her. As part of their routine, the twins exchanged positions at that time of the day so Agate could have her turn to observe Amber. Copper exited the room while waving goodbye, leaving Agate to feel warmed at heart when Amber happily tried to reach out to her physically.[10]

Wizard in Training[]

As a Wizard Council recruit training to become a Wizard, Agate spent most of her days training her skills as a combatant, armed with a signature, magical spear made from Bravery. Over the years of practice, she became remarkably forbidding as an adversary in any fight due to her physical strength and endurance combined with her Bravery magic. Agate also accepted various challenges to help improve her own capabilities, desiring to transcend her complete proficiency.[4] Being very good friends with Rin Winterway,[11] the two of them eventually grew mutual romantic feelings for each other.[12]

Conflict Against Monsters[]

War of Humans and Monsters[]

A few years following the death of her father,[13] nineteen-year-old[2] Agate and Copper Lightvale participated in the War of Humans and Monsters with their fellow Wizards in the Wizard Council.[14] Agate and Copper then witnessed an incident caused by monsters, and this ultimately changed Agate's perspective on the species to a negative one, seeing them as genuine threats.[15] During the battles, the Lightvale twins had killed the greatest number of monsters, far more than Roy Goldburn, Shane Goldburn, Rin Winterway, Kody Fallenfire and Mila Rutrow had.[16] The Wizard Council and humans came victorious in the war's conclusion, thus the surviving monsters surrendered and were brought into the Underground regions of Meropos. Seven Wizards of the Council gathered together, consisting of Agate, her brother, Roy, Shane, Rin, Kody and Mila, and casted a magic spell that formed the Barrier, sealing the monsters in the Underground.[17]

Ten Peaceful Years[]

In the aftermath of the War of Humans and Monsters, Agate and Copper Lightvale eventually became in charge of the small Determino city of Grancuil[18] and were left with rules by their king to preserve the Barrier to keep the monsters concealed, a task Agate accepted seriously.[15] One day, the Lightvale twins and Amber Lightvale were happily playing together outside. Agate gave her younger sister a piggyback ride as they light-heartedly chased after Copper. One night, the three siblings slept in the same bed together and remained calmly unconscious until the sunrise. On another day, Agate and Amber were cutting off apple peels at a table. She held a bigger apple than her sister, and she felt amused by the sight of Amber's doing this activity.[10]

Duel at the Determino Battle Arena[]

"Their opinions on monsterkind differed. The SOUL of Determination wanted to destroy the Barrier, while Bravery thought it was a good measure to keep the peace. Confident, Bravery challenged her brother. If he could prove to be more powerful than she, he could destroy the Barrier. Bravery's power was greater, but as the battle continued, she felt an incredible strength within her sibling. His Determination had no limits, leading him to victory."
W. D. Gaster[src]

Ten years following the creation of the Barrier,[3] Agate and Copper Lightvale came to realize that their perspectives on monsterkind opposed each other; she perceived the species as threats to humanity and that the Barrier should be preserved to keep them away, while her brother believed otherwise.[1] One night, the siblings had an argument over this at a table in the Lightvale Residence. Suddenly, Agate summoned her flaming spear and pointed it to Copper's surprised face, grinning confidently as she challenged him to a public, legitimate duel, where Copper could destroy the Barrier if he could defeat Agate.[10][1]

Anticipating the fight, Agate felt jealous of Copper for possessing Determination, a SOUL Trait she knew she could not overpower.[19] The match was already settled and announced, but prior to the day it would occur, Agate discussed with her brother again. She was able to convince Copper that keeping the Barrier active was the best option for their people at the moment. With this, Copper agreed to lose the arranged duel against her.[20] When the date of the duel at the Determino Battle Arena came, Agate and Copper fought and swung their respective weapons against each other.[10]

However, in the middle of it, Copper broke his promise by using the full extent of his power to attack. Agate, spear in hand, realized this when her determined brother summoned his arsenal of Determination construct weapons, despairing her to tears.[20] Agate managed to slice cuts around his body, wound his forehead, and bruise his left cheek, but after some more weapon clashing, the unscathed Agate was subdued. She fell onto the ground on her backside as Copper's Sword of Determination drew close to her throat.

Her brother glared her down before asserting his victory to the cheering crowd.[10] Agate's emotions were overcome with utter humiliation from this loss and despair from Copper's betrayal, and it resulted in her losing her Bravery, and with it, her magic.[20] In response to her magic loss, both Agate's tear-filled eyes and hair turned grey. Standing up, she sprinted off to exit the Arena, evading the audience and her two concerned siblings.[10]

Into Madness[]

Discovering HATE[]

"She exiled herself, searching for a Trait greater than Determination. And alas, she found it."
W. D. Gaster[src]

Overwhelmed by humility from her loss in the Duel at the Determino Battle Arena, Agate evaded and exiled herself from Determino. The Wizard, now lacking her signature SOUL Trait, embarked on a journey to search for a Trait far powerful than Determination to have revenge against Copper Lightvale.[10][1] Eventually, she encountered HATE, and using the malevolent entity, Agate inverted her former Bravery into Fear, which held potential to surpass Determination magic. As a result of her bond to HATE, the depressed Agate experienced a major psychotic split.[citation needed] One night, Agate, now sporting brown hair and eyes, returned to the Lightvale Residence, where she met her brother in the main hall. The twins seemingly reunited and hugged each other, but Agate secretly did not reciprocate Copper's love for her.[10]

Fratricide[]

"I win."
―Agate Lightvale to Copper Lightvale[src]

A peaceful day was followed by an almost stormy night, and in the Lightvale Residence, Agate attempted to challenge Copper Lightvale to a rematch, though her brother refused. In response, she shoved Copper to the floor and pointed her spear towards his neck, demanding him to fight her. Copper still sentimentally refused, much to her anger. Suddenly, Agate discerned a means to demotivate Copper and eradicate his Determination, which was murdering his beloved Amber Lightvale.

She laughed psychotically at this perception, then, with a wicked smile, turned around to face her terrified younger sister. Copper tried striking her from behind with a Sword of Determination, but Agate reflexively turned back around to try and attack back with her spear, though it was blocked by his Shield of Determination. Soon, Agate noticed Amber trying to run away to a different room, so she launched a fireball at the door, exploding it and briefly trapping her in place. She approached her petrified sister and raised her spear in glee before brutally impaling her.

Agate unstuck her spear from Amber's body with cruel laughter and walked towards Copper, now frozen in extreme grief and emotionally defeated, having lost his Determination. The crazed Wizard of Fear penetrated her weapon through Copper's chest, though he gave the littlest of reactions. Finding his pain adorable, she chuckled and held his chin up to face her. Agate, now satisfied, declared her victory right before Copper's SOUL shattered.[10]

Sacrifice for the Black Beast[]

This section requires expansion
"You shall look for the bearer of the red SOUL of your time. Kill them, and the whole world shall be yours. Make them fear you, and if that's not enough, HATE will give you the power necessary to fulfill this mission. And with that, little Amber... my life is yours..."
―Agate Lightvale to Bête Noire[src]

Immediately after murdering her siblings, Agate felt pain in her chest, since her SOUL could not adapt to the sudden change of being inverted. She held out her brown SOUL of Fear to see that it was cracking.[10] Agate knew her great powers should not go to waste with her impending death, and that this strength would have rendered her greater than a mere queen, so she decided she needed to make her will continue.[21]

Agate picked up Amber Lightvale's corpse by her sweater's backside and travelled to a nearby cave, all while Agate clutched her pained chest. She began casting the strictly forbidden Bête Noire Spell to construct a highly destructive and powerful creature known as Bête Noire, who would house Amber's body.[10] As she did, Agate told the soon-to-be-made Bête that she should search for the bearer of a Determination SOUL of the time period she would wake in. Once she did, Bête would kill them and successfully conquer the world. Agate continued instructing her to make her prey fear her, and if that were not enough, HATE would give her the necessary power to complete the mission. Concluding her order, she referred to Bête as Amber and gave her life to her.[22]

Levitating her dying SOUL in front of herself, Agate's hands manifested brown smoke-like energy as part of the spell towards her SOUL. Suddenly, the spell altered the brown color of the energy, her SOUL, her eyes and hair to pink. The pink SOUL, now restored, hovered above Amber's body then inverted the colors of her clothes and colored hair to a pink color scheme. Agate laughed maniacally while the SOUL absorbed Amber's altered body particles to be used as Bête's vessel.[10]

She designated her creation with the sole purpose of guaranteeing humans and monsters do not live peacefully together,[1] by executing all of monsterkind and subjugating humanity with fear.[23] Agate also imprinted a series of ideas, including how Bête's only friend would be her other half Akumu, how humans were untrustworthy, how monsters were supposedly dangerous, and how the two races were bound to slaughter each other again in another war, therefore Bête's actions would be "beneficial" as they were speeding the "process".[24]

She bestowed a promise to Bête that the latter would eventually rule all who would survive her war.[21]

Dust[]

Near the beginning of the episode, Bete's "mother" told Gaster that Bete needs to stay in Gaster's Lab. Bete's "mother" appeared to look very similar to Agate. But since Agate was dead at the time, it turned out that it was a hallucination by Bete.

Agate after losing her trait in Dust.

Gaster then reads the story of "Human History: Volume 9" and gets the following information: "Sometime after the barrier was created, Copper and his sister Agate fought against each other to determine if the barrier should be destroyed or not. Thanks to his trait's great strength, Copper was victorious. As for Agate, losing the fight caused her to lose her trait. Out of humiliation, she ran away and went missing, being nowhere to be seen for a long amount of time.

Eventually, after inverting her trait, a very dangerous and forbidden spell on her soul, Agate returned for a rematch against her brother. This time, however, she managed to kill him, and the kingdom fell in ruin due to the fact that there was no one to rule. Unfortunately for her, Agate's soul was unable to adapt to the change due to the result of the spell she cast upon it. Therefore, she sacrificed her very own soul to create the most powerful and destructive being imaginable, who would ensure that humans and monsters would never live in peace with one another.

Glitchtale Origins: The Black Beast[]

This episode managed to provide more detail on Agate and Copper, and the episode began, we can witness that Amber was born during the night. Copper and Agate were watching the scene and just saw what could most likely be their mother dying. Her soul, which is presumably an Integrity soul, cracked and eventually shattered upon Amber's birth.

As Amber got older, Agate befriended her, Agate and Copper raised Amber together. But eventually, it was revealed that she had a special green and blue soul, otherwise known as a two trait soul.

However, things began to change once the two siblings started to argue over whether the barrier should be kept or not. This eventually led to them battling, with Copper winning due to his determination soul's strength. Agate's loss humiliated her, causing her to lose her trait, and flee the kingdom. She started looking for a trait that had a chance to defeat Determination, and in doing so, she found it: Fear.

Later, Copper and Agate were reunited, though something seemed different about Agate this time, so once again, she challenged her brother. However, it was against his will. This time though, she ended up winning because, during the fight, Agate had killed Amber, causing Copper to lose his trait out of fear. She then proceeded to kill him whilst he was frozen on his knees, shocked over what he was witnessing. Knowing that her time was running short because her soul was cracking, she performed the Bête Noire spell in a cave and used Amber as a vessel for it.

My Promise[]

Agate only made a (non-physical) cameo in this episode. She popped up when Asgore said that Bete was the result of "a twisted mind's spell."

Ḣ̸͈a̷̞̽ẗ̵̥́e̸̟͒[]

Can you see her

Bête absorbing the attack and Agate appears behind her.

At the stadium, while King Asgore and Toriel are battling against Bete, Toriel attacks Bete with her fire magic, one of her strong strikes. Just after that, King Asgore and Toriel make a combined attack at Bete; however, Bete easily blocks the attack, reflects it, and then shoots it back towards them.

Here, at the moment, Agate makes another non-physical cameo; here, she appears behind Bete as she returns the flames that Toriel and Asgore fired together, signifying that Asgore realized who Bete truly was.

Personality[]

Originally, Agate was a kind and selfless young woman that greatly valued her family and acted like a motherly figure around Amber. She is also known to have a constant desire to surpass her limits and will be up to any challenge if she knows she'll improve in the process.[25] However, it was no secret that Agate believed that the barrier should be kept up. Though, this wasn't because she hated monsters but rather because she believed that humans and monsters living together would cause more wars, meaning that she was simply trying to keep the peace. She also might've been bold and confident, as shown when she bravely challenged Copper. But it comes to a surprise, that she was not mentally brave, and she always followed what her superiors had to say, showing that she was also submissive.[citation needed]

Unfortunately, everything changed after she lost her battle with her twin brother Copper Lightvale. This brought unbearable humiliation upon her, causing her to lose her trait, and run away. In fact, she became obsessed with ensuring humans and monsters never live with each other and began to seek revenge on Copper for humiliating her. In fact, she was willing to go great lengths, such as committing murder in order to achieve these goals.

After inverting her trait, she turned completely insane, immensely violent, horrifyingly ruthless, and highly sadistic, always smiling psychotically in the face of her opponent's pain. She clearly didn't care about the people she hurt (even if they were children) and showed no problem with corrupting innocent people. A perfect example of her cruelty was when she smiled and showed no remorse when she forced Copper to watch her kill her own sister, Amber Lightvale, who was completely defenseless and innocent; she did nothing but act as a loving younger sister to both Agate and Copper. All Amber wanted was to be a good and loving sister, but due to the cruelty that humanity contained, Agate, the true monster, murdered both Amber and Copper in cold blood.

Even after all she did, Agate seemed to have believed that she was a good person and failed to see the wrong in her evil deeds, but it is obvious that she is far from sympathetic the moment she willingly embraced evil.

Agate used to have redeeming qualities but lost them out of her quest for revenge because she used HATE to do so, which caused her to completely lose any redeeming qualities she may still possess before.[26]

Powers and Abilities[]

Powers[]

"All this power... it can't just be wasted like this. With this strength, I could be more than a mere queen. I must make my will live on."
―Agate Lightvale[src]
  • Magic: Like ninety-eight percent of the human population during the 13th Century, Agate Lightvale could wield mystical energy, but to a high degree that earned her the title of Wizard.
    • Chromatic Magic/HATE Enhancement: Originally, Agate possessed a regular SOUL Trait suited for her physical Bravery, but after losing in the Duel at the Determino Battle Arena, she lost motivation and could no longer harness her former powers. However, after encountering the malevolent force HATE, she had invert her former Trait into Fear, a corrupted form of magic that strengthened her potentially beyond the ability of Determination.
      • Fear: Desperate for a SOUL Trait that held power surpassing Determination, Agate turned towards HATE to be enabled to harness the darker counterpart of her former Bravery. Possessing a dark orange SOUL, eyes and hair, she maintained similar abilities to her long-lost Trait, but with an amplification in strength.
        • Weapon Summoning: Just as how she had done before, Agate could conjure her primary weapon, her spear, out of thin air, but this time, her spear was darkened in color, representing her Inverted Trait. She only summoned her spear during the Assassination of Amber and Copper Lightvale, where she initially threatened her brother before drawing it towards her sister.
        • Fragokinesis: Another aspect shared from Bravery, Agate could generate and project explosive magic, which she used to cast a fiery orb towards a door in the Lightvale Residence to prevent Amber Lightvale from escaping, destroying the wall and causing some debris to collapse.
        • Pyrokinesis: Agate is able to manipulate fire, though not generate it on her own. Though, Agate’s spear can generate fire, indicating that she has a source for her ability to manipulate fire. In a tweet, Agate was taught to learn pyrokinetic magic by Asgore.[27]
    • Runic Magic: A powerful yet rarely acknowledged type of magic that focuses on manipulating the body, Agate only found use of this in the last moments before her demise.[28]
      • Spell Casting: Agate had only practiced the act of casting one particular spell relevant to Runic Magic, the Bête Noire Spell. Knowing her time was running out due to the side effects of her Invertion, she casted this strictly forbidden spell to sacrifice her own SOUL, turning it pink, as well as to utilize necromancy on the corpse of her own sister Amber Lightvale, inverting her colors and transforming her into the vessel for her very own Bête Noire.

Former Powers[]

Abilities[]

  • Gifted Intellect: Agate was rather talented in her intelligence and considered smart until her descent to insanity.[29]
  • Master Combatant: Agate had trained her whole life to be an experienced professional in combat, having a sense of boldness towards any physical pain along the way. Additionally, she and her brother had eliminated the greatest number of monsters during the War of Humans and Monsters. In the Duel at the Determino Battle Arena, Agate was successful in landing some wounds on her brother, who claimed victorious with his Determination, but she had protected herself enough to not receive any scars.
  • Expert Tactician: In her intended rematch against Copper Lightvale, the corrupted Agate deduced the method to overpower her brother, one that was utterly ruthless. She understood that Copper could lose motivation and his Determination if his beloved younger sister Amber Lightvale was murdered, so Agate committed this act of fratricide before his eyes, a fatal action that worked for her.

Trivia[]

  • She was aged nineteen during the war times[2] and twenty-nine by the time she died.
  • Bête Noire knows what happened in the past, because Bête Noire has all the memories of her "creator" (Agate), due to having her creator's soul.[30]
  • Agate's name is also referenced to Agateophobia, which is the fear of insanity.[31]
  • Inverting your soul trait will give you a high chance of a painful death as your soul cannot handle the sudden change. (Example: Agate Lightvale died when she inverted her soul trait to Fear.)[32]
  • Agate Lightvale and Copper Lightvale came from the beginning of Undertale.[33]
  • Copper and Agate could also be named after the minerals, Copper, and Agate.
    • Also, there's another mineral named Copper Agate.
    • Amber can also mean a fossilized resin, which usually preserves things, just like how Amber's body preserved Agate's soul.
  • Agate, even when dead, is still responsible for the creation of Bête, and it is still her fault (Frisk could still be blamed) for creating the conflict in Season 2 since Bête Noire was created to fix the glitches.
  • If Agate used Copper as the vessel for the Bête Noire spell, the spell would've been stronger than the currently known Bête Noire, but she didn't because of her massive hatred and bitterness towards Copper.[34]
  • There was a ten-year-long gap between the creation of the barrier and Agate and Copper's incident.[3]
  • Agate Lightvale is technically Bête Noire in a way because her soul was the one used to make the spell.[35]
